Vacation at the Lake. ☀

Jude

Do these make my nose look big?!

Kevin’s family and I went on a fabulous vacation to Deep Creek Lake last week.  7 days of relaxation – some days there was rain, some days there was sunshine.  If you follow me on Instagram, you got a taste of our wonderful vacation! I definitely uploaded a new photo every 5 minutes.

It was Kevin’s 27th birthday while we were there. (Yep, I’m a year older than him. But I look younger, right?!) We ate frozen peanut butter and mint chocolate chip pies, drank sangria, played Taboo, and shot pool.  Hikes to waterfalls, long dog walks, antique store shopping, and veggies on the grill. There was lots of beer, food, laughter, and more beer.

I went on lakeside runs with my future sister-in-law (and bridesmaid!) Kerry, we ate s’mores by the campfire, went to the beach with Kevin’s niece, and took plenty of pictures to capture it all. And ate more s’mores after that.

DCL15

Roadtrippin’ :D

 Jude’s pumped for vacay!

DCL19

Don’t worry, Jude – we won’t leave you!

DCL19-9

The sun shone bright on our drive there.

DCL19-8

Healthy road trip snack: Homemade Baked Apple Chips

DCL19-10

Gorgeous lakeside view from our back porch.

DCL19-7Deep Creek Lake

It was breathtaking!

DCL19-11

We went on a hike to the waterfalls in Swallow Falls State Park.

DCL19-2

We’ve been there a few times before.

Swallow Falls is where Kevin proposed 7 months ago!

DCL19-14DCL19-13DCL19-12

DCL

The water was very muddy after the rain one day.

PS: that’s the exact spot where Kevin got on one knee last January!

DCL1

We celebrated Kevin’s birthday with sparklers.

DCL19-16roasting marshmallows

And s’mores.

It was National S’mores Day, after all.

DCL2

And Skinny Frozen Peanut Butter Pie.

Skinny Mint Chocolate Chip Pie-2

And Skinny Frozen Mint Chocolate Chip Pie, too!

There were 12 of us and we were at a higher elevation, so I just figured it would be easier to make no-bake treats for Kevin’s birthday dessert. No body seemed to mind!

DCL19-15

Yes, we look like axe murderers.

There wasn’t a food processor at the lake house, so I couldn’t grind the Oreos for the pie crusts. I had to crumble them in a large ziplock bag.  Because of this, the frozen pies were very hard to cut!

Other delicious treats:

DCL4

I’ll take two, please.

DCL19-5

Summer in a bottle.

DCL19-3

Dried kiwi – so tasty!

DCL6

M&Ms for breakfast. Why not?

Kevin and Sally

It was the best vacation!

Kevin had just finished summer classes and I had finished the first half of my cookbook manuscript (cookbook release = Spring 2014).  We both needed some rest and relaxation.

Back to work and back to reality.

 ☆ More trips this month

  • My sister Sarah is flying into Philly to see my parents next week. It’s her birthday and my parent’s 40th wedding anniversary, so I will be in my PA hometown next week.
  • My best friend’s sister is getting married next month and we are going to Chicago for her bachelorette party in a couple weeks!

Any fun trips you’ve taken this summer? Or will take soon? Tell me about it!

Aww it looks like you guys had such a great time Sally! I’m so happy that you could kick back and spend time with Kevin and Jude. It’s super cute how you made a pit stop to hike at Swallow Falls! Lots of wonderful memories for you there ;) After all my traveling this summer, tomorrow I have to get back to school. I guess it’s nice to be in more of a routine again (so that I’m not going to bed at midnight and waking up at 9 or ten) but I’m going to miss the long, lazy days of summer. I am looking forward to that crispness of fall though!

The waffle with M&Ms in the holes, so adorable.

And normally I don’t think of you as a ‘woodsy’ type of girl. It’s usually pink and sprinkles :) But I loooove seeing you in your shorts and ready for a run/hike with Jude, and seeing all these big trees. Reminds me of Northern Cal (Marin county) and I love it up there!

The axe murdered pic. I love it :) Thanks for sharing all these, Sally! It looks beautiful!

As for fun trips… I’m actually coming to the East Coast in under 2 weeks! My dad and I are huge baseball fans, so we’re going to see 3 new stadiums together. I did think that you and Kevin were deeply engrossed in the pie cutting process… the hard cookie base explains it (I’m sure they were ridiculously yummy, regardless of the chunky cookies!).
