Warning. This recipe is dangerously addicting. It is physically impossible to STOP eating bite by bite by bite. Before you know it, the entire batch will be gone. I speak (type?) from experience.

If you’ve been reading my blog for awhile, you must already know that I adore eating puppy chow (aka Muddy Buddies).  I have made 6 puppy chow recipes so far, and I do not plan to stop anywhere in the near future. PS: puppy chow is NOT dog food. I’ve had to explain that to a few readers in the past.

I made today’s version earlier this week. I brought it to Kevin’s family’s house on Wednesday night when we had crabs, beer, and ice cream cake for his sisters birthday. They could NOT get enough of it, especially Kevin’s niece. If you like Oreos, cookies ‘n cream flavored treats, and rich chocolate goodness, this stuff is for you.

Just like all of my puppy chow recipes, today’s version requires no baking at all. That’s right, give your oven (and yourself!) a rest.  It’s too hot out! There are 5 ingredients in this recipe.  Yes, five.  And you may just have them all in your pantry right now.

You’ll need 2 small bowls and 2 giant bowls.  The small bowls will be for melting your semi-sweet chocolate and your white chocolate. Yep, there are two different chocolates needed. You are making a “cookies” version of puppy chow and a “cream” version of puppy chow.

You will need 6 oz of each chocolate. I like to use Ghirardelli White Chocolate and Baker’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate. Each bar is 4 oz, so you need 1.5. I add a teaspoon of shortening to each bowl when I melt the chocolates, thinning them out slightly so they are pourable over the Chex cereal.

Fill each of your large bowls with 3 cups of Chex cereal.  Pour the melted white chocolate over one, semi-sweet over the other. Gently stir. You want to avoid crushing the cereal at all costs.  Make sure you have 2 nice big bowls to do the mixing or else your counter will be covered in chocolate-y cereal.  Which doesn’t sound so bad. 😉

You’ll need 8 crushed Oreos.  Grind them up in your blender or food processor until they resemble a fine crumb.  They will coat your cereal squares, along with confectioners’ sugar. Pour the crushed Oreos and sugar into two large zipped-top bags.  Add the white chocolate cereal mixture to one, the semi-sweet chocolate cereal mixture to the other.  Shake shake shake! Shake shake shake! Shake your cereal.

There, you’re done. It takes about 10 minutes.

Which version will you like better? The cookies or the cream? I like to eat one of each square at a time because it’s too hard to pick a favorite.

This new version of puppy chow stays nice and crunchy for days. If it will last that long! Does anyone else think that puppy chow should be illegal? For how easy it is to make and how addicting it is to eat – it should be a crime. Totally not bikini friendly, but totally worth every chocolate-y bite. I speak from experience when I say that “one bite” of today’s sweet snack is not enough. “One taste” is not enough.  “One small bowl” is not enough.  Heck, even a huge bowl is not enough. Trust me, you will NOT be able to put this stuff down.

Cookies Puppy Chow

  • 6 oz semi-sweet chocolate squares (or chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon shortening
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 4 Oreos, crushed into a fine crumb
  • 2/3 cup confectioners' (powdered) sugar

Cream Puppy Chow

  • 6 oz white chocolate squares (or white chocolate chips)
  • 1 teaspoon shortening
  • 3 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 4 Oreos, crushed into a fine crumb
  • 2/3 cup confectioners' (powdered) sugar


  1. Begin by crushing 8 Oreos into a fine crumb using a blender or food processor. Add half of the Oreos to one large zipped-top bag, and half of the Oreos into a 2nd large zipped-top bag. Add 2/3 cup of confectioners' sugar to each bag. Set aside.
  2. Set out two large bowls. One for the "cookies" version and one for the "cream" version. Pour three cups of Chex cereal into each bowl. Set aside.
  3. You will need two small bowls. Melt the semi-sweet chocolate and shortening together in one bowl using the microwave. Melt in 30 second increments, stirring after each time. Mine took 1 minute total. Repeat with white chocolate & shortening in a separate bowl.
  4. Pour semi-sweet chocolate over 1 bowl of cereal, white chocolate over the second bowl of cereal. Stir gently to coat each. You do not want to break the cereal up. Pour the mixtures each into the reserved zipped-top bags. Seal the bags and shake until all the cereal is coated with the sugar/Oreo mixture. Discard excess powder and enjoy. Store at room temperature up to 2 weeks.

    White chocolate and cookies/cream anything are my weaknesses. Just the picture did it for me.. I jumped in the car to the grocery store before even reading this entire post. I usually use a make shift double boiler to melt the chocolate.. What if I don’t have shortening to melt with the chocolate.. Can I melt it on its own in the microwave or should I add some butter?

      Hi Sarah – you can melt it on its own, but it will not be thinned out and could be too thick to mix with the cereal. You could try a teaspoon of butter or even coconut oil.

    Ohmygosh Sally, I do the SAME thing! I eat flavors separately — my mom even bought me one of those children’s plates with dividers for each section last Christmas! Love how cute (and sweet) your puppy chow looks. And for the record… If we’re talking JUST about Oreos (and not “cookies ‘n cream” desserts), the cookie is definitely my favorite part! 😉

I used to be (well, still am…who am I kidding?) obsessed with those, and whenever they came out around the holidays, I would end up eating an entire bag in…well, not a very long period of time.       No, it’s a snack mix for humans. Puppy chow is also called muddy buddies or a sweet version of chex mix.

    Hi Sally,

    When you crush Oreo cookies for your recipe such as this puppy chow or the skinny cookie and cream smoothie, do you crush the icing part of the cookie as well? Also, do you have any idea if I can freeze Oreo cookies to save for use in future recipes?

      Yep, crush the entire cookie (cream and cookie) – and yes, I freeze Oreos all the time.

    I’m not seeing a difference between the “cookie” recipe and the “cream” recipe. You mention to mix the two together, are you just doubling the recipe and then adding the chopped oreos?
