Addictive Recipes from a Self-Taught Baker

Interview: Behind the Scenes of SBA!

Food Blogger Pro Interview

Gooooood morning! (This just autocorrected to “gooey morning!”)

Today, my friends over at Food Blogger Pro are sharing an interview where I discuss all things blogging. In this 40 minute podcast, you’ll hear me blab… seriously it’s 40 minutes… about how I turned my blog into my full time job, what it’s like running my own business (how did I get here?!), the food, the monster that is social media, the traffic, writing cookbooks, and any advice I would give to new food bloggers.

I haven’t done too many interviews, so when the gang at Food Blogger Pro asked me to jump on a call, I instantly agreed. I don’t get too many chances to talk about my addiction to baking. Kidding! Haha?

If you’re a blogger looking for advice to grow your blog or simply want to hear my story, give it a listen. Hopefully you can learn something that will help you.

What is Food Blogger Pro? FBP is a blogging community and a wonderfully beneficial resource to food bloggers looking to learn more about the business. Q: Bloggers, what is your #1 blogging tip?

  1. I LOVE FBP!!! Yes, totally needed to shout that. Lindsay and Bjork have created such an amazing platform of resources. GAH! I love them! Just my luck, my drive home is 40 minutes, so I will be listening to your interview this afternoon!

My best blogging tip: don’t get hung up on the kitchen fails. When your job is to provide recipes for your readers, it can get overwhelming. I embraced my fails and put them in a comprehensive post at the end of the year, and it was one of my most popular posts. I got so many “thank you”s for showing how normal of a person I am, and this year, every time I fail, I say “welp! Gotta take a pretty picture!”

  2. Can’t wait to get home from work and give this a listen tonight!!! 🙂 You always give such great advice and insight into this crazy blogging world!

  3. Is it weird that the first thing I thought about while reading this blog is “I get to hear Sally’s voice?!”? Hahaha.

  4. Awesome interview Sally, I loved listening to how you built up the blog and the amount of work you had to put in to get where you are.
I wondered who Bjork would interview next after kicking off with Bjork and Lindsay interviewing each other.  Perfect choice 🙂

  5. I was so excited to see that Bjork would be interviewing you! I have just finished listening to the first two episodes and loved them. My advice for bloggers would be to just keep going even when it gets hard. There are going to be things that discourage you, but to not let that keep you from sharing your love of food.

  6. Can’t wait to listen to it!

  7. This is really exciting, Sally!  I love FBP and am in the middle of listening to Lindsay and Bjork’s first podcast. I think they are amazing people and have brought so much to food bloggers around the world. I can’t wait to listen to your interview.  I know others will love hearing about your rise to success straight from the “baker’s” mouth 🙂

  8. Just finished listening and it’s so inspirational listening to your story.

  9. Ohhh I can’t wait to listen to this!!! I loved the 2 first interviews. My #1 blogging tip: you can do it 🙂

  10. This is awesome! Can’t wait to listen to it!

  11. I can’t wait to listen to this when I come home! ☺
I’m kind of curious how ‘the voice behind the baking’ is actually going to sound like 😀

  12. I’m loving the FBP podcast so far! Can’t wait to listen to your episode!

  13. Can’t wait to give this a listen later tonight!

  14. I always love learning new things from well established bloggers! You provide excellent advice, Sally! I can’t wait to listen to your podcast later!

  15. I had fun listening to the podcast and listening to you! 🙂

  16. I really enjoyed this podcast Sally! Some great tips in there! Thank you for taking the time! 🙂

  17. I’ll be listening to you while I pound it out on the treadmill tonight Sally! You are one of my truest inspirations and role models. I look up to you and your blogging journey so much, and of course, I fall in love with all of your beautiful food. Can’t wait to listen!
Oh an my number one tip: LOVE it or LEAVE it. If you don’t love blogging, and all the time and energy it requires, then leave it. It has to be something that you love passionately or the time isn’t worth it. Luckily I love my Thoroughly Nourished Life!

  18. Your interview was so great! Nice job! Blogger interviews make me realize behind all these amazing, successful blogs is a real person who made real sacrifices to get it there. Very inspirational. Just what I needed for motivation today! Thanks again for sharing. You rock!

  19. Listened to this on the way home tonight, loved it! I really appreciate how you tell it like it is. It may appear to be all sprinkles and fun on the blog, but it’s hard, hard work. Like, every weekend and every night after putting in your 40 hours per week kind of work. Thanks for giving us a “sneak peek” behind your amazing blog!

  20. I listened to the podcast while at work today. I am such a big fan of you, Lindsay and Bjork. You guys are my inspiration for blogging. I started my blog about 6 months ago and I’m still trying to figure it all out. Hopefully, one day I will to be able to do this full time too. Thank you so much for sharing your story. 🙂

  21. Hi Sally
I’ve listed to the podcast today and found it really interesting, especially that photography and post processing takes up the most time. I guess I shouldn’t be surprised since your pictures are always so great!

  22. Sally, I just want to say hi, and that your blog honestly never fails to bring a huge smile to my face. You manage to present us with delicious, adorable images and recipes without a sense of gluttony or guilt–qualities that kind of make me feel bad for LOVING baking when reading other food and fitness-driven blogs. Your use of butter, sugar, and sprinkles lifts my heart. Seriously. Thank you.

  23. Hi Sally! Loved listening to your story! I recently started blogging FT too! You’ve got a new reader 🙂 I wanted to ask – I love your recipe index – can I ask how you created it? Was it a WP plugin?

  24. I listened to this podcast as soon as I got home from work last night. I can’t even tell you how excited I was to hear it! I’ve used FBP myself (their videos are SO helpful), love pinch of yum, and love your blog too. So when I read that you were doing a podcast with them I almost did a back flip. As imagined, you have such a sweet, relatable tone of voice. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this interview, and of course congratulations on all your success with this blog, you have inspired so many others and truly deserve it!

  25. I just wanted to say that I love your blog and it is my favorite one in all the blogs I follow. I have learned so much from you, from weighing the ingredients to having room temperature eggs. It has made me a better cook, and that is what I strive to be, (baking is my addiction to). So thank you for all the hard work that you do! 🙂

  26. Hi Sally,

I’m a member at Food Blogger Pro and I was thrilled to see they chose you to interview (because I love your site and I have a baking addiction too)! I can’t thank-you enough for sharing yourself and how you built your audience. I have a date tonight with your Pinterest site……..I can’t wait to explore it.
    thank-you, Wendy

  27. Sally,

What a great interview! Bork asked really great questions and I learned so much! It was great to visualize your timeline from when you got started to when you turned SBA into a business and your motivation. Really inspirational stuff, thanks.

  28. Yay! Saving this for Friday when I have to go clean houses. Booo to having to go clean houses, yay to having great podcasts as diversions to get me through the day.

  29. Great interview! And so inspiring. Thanks so much for sharing. Your first blog post was on my birthday and of course I had to check it out. I see the progression in your photography. And I agree with your biggest advice to love what you do and I sure do. It’s a key ingredient and even in my blog name! Looking forward to your cookbook! 🙂

  30. Can’t wait to listen when I get home from work!
