Let’s Review the August Baking Challenge
August 2018 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Chocolate Chip Cookie Layer Cake
This month was filled with towering cookies! Using the base cookie cake recipe, there were dozens of stacked cookie cakes with all sorts of frosting and assorted toppings. Peanut butter frosting and sprinkles, chocolate frosting and M&Ms, cream cheese frosting and chocolate chips, dark chocolate frosting and toffee chips, plus pink frosting, mint chip frosting, and even a cookie cake shaped like a heart. I applaud your creativity, bakers! This was such a fun challenge and I enjoyed seeing your excitement about a wonderfully simple recipe.
One of my favorite recipe reviews came from reader Debbie:
“I made this cake yesterday, using three 9-inch round pans and the results were AMAZING! Per my son’s request, I used your Favorite Vanilla Buttercream Frosting recipe, which was perfect. The cake looked beautiful, and cut very easily. LOVE this recipe so much that I decided to take the leap and enter the Baking Challenge for the first time! Thank you for sharing such a delicious (and easy) recipe!”
We gathered as many chocolate chip cookie layer cake photo entries as we could and included them below.

Hi Sally! I’m so excited about this months challenge! I just recently made a small batch of cream puffs for the first time and I’m hooked. My mom has always loved cream puffs and eclairs, and now she’s got me into them big time! I’ve been trying to come up with some awesome ideas for fillings. My birthday is the 14th of this month and I wanted to do cream puffs instead of cake, or along with some cake! lol you can never have too many desserts around, especially homemade! Thank you so much for having choux as this month’s challenge, I can’t wait to get started!
So excited for this! Tha ks for all the work you put into this site and creating recipes!
Can’t wait to try your version i have made this many time but I make churros, or churro bowls topped with ice cream and caramel sauce
I’ve never made a recipe of yours that was not a hit with everyone. This, of course, is because your directions, tips and pictures are perfect. I’ve always wanted to try making cream puffs. I may just have to try your recipe. The only issue with all of your recipes is that we don’t stop eating them. Thanks and have a great weekend.
Yes!!! Croquembouche time!! 🙂
Nice job on the chocolate chip cakes, they look beautiful!
