August 2017 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Checkerboard Cake

Lots of color, lots of frosting, lots of fun. The real trick is in the assembly so that checkerboard design shows, but it’s easier than you think!

How to Join Sally's Baking Challenge

  1. Recipe: On or around the 1st of each month, I publish a new challenge recipe. Sign up for Sally’s Baking Challenge emails so you’re alerted as soon as a new challenge recipe is published!
  2. Bake & Comment: Bake the recipe during that month.
  3. Send: Share your recipe photo with us via email: [email protected]. By emailing your recipe photo, you are automatically entered in the giveaway. For a bonus entry, leave a review on the challenge recipe. Instagram direct messages are hard to track, so please email your recipe photo instead. Feel free to share on social media using #sallysbakingchallenge and tagging me (@sallysbakeblog), but the only way to guarantee you are in the running is sending your entry via email.

July 2017 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Homemade Cherry Pie

We tackled completely from scratch and homemade cherry pie in July. No shortcuts here! We used real ingredients and fresh fruits that you can truly taste and appreciate. I am absolutely delighted to see that so many bakers participated this month– conquering fears of from-scratch pie crust, ditching that canned cherry filling, and having fun in the process. Your creative lattice work and crust detail is seriously impressive!

One of my favorite recipe reviews came from reader Niki:

“This pie was absolutely amazing!!! I just love cherry with almond flavor, so summery and sweet! Also, I must say that I will never use a different pie crust recipe again! This one was so perfect, none of the other crusts I’ve tried even come close.”
