Coffee Break

Let’s catch up!

Update on Jude

2 weeks ago, we learned that our 11 year old dog, Jude, has cancer. We are completely devastated to share this news, but remain hopeful. Jude had a cancerous tumor removed in surgery this week, which was a palliative treatment to make him more comfortable and keep him thriving as best he can. Our vet said Jude is in incredible shape otherwise, especially given his age. He loves going on short walks, he plays with his tennis ball, rolls on his back, and plays tug with Franklin. We believe we caught the tumor early. He’s recovering from surgery now. (These photos are from before the procedure, of course.) Hopefully we will know more information about the cancer after the tumor is analyzed. It has been an incredibly hard two weeks for our family. We remain confident that our happy Jude has plenty more love and life to give. If you’d like to follow along, I have an Instagram account for my dogs. (Would you expect anything else?!)

It’s difficult to put into words how much our dogs, Jude and Franklin, mean to my husband, our daughter, and I. They are so much more than pets– they’re our family.

Remember when Jude came to some book tour stops in 2015? 🙂

NYC Cooking Demo

Before the whirlwind 2 weeks, I had a book signing and cooking demo at DŌ, Cookie Dough Confections. Such a fun trip! I brought along two of my wonderful team members, Stephanie and Hilari. Besides the cooking demo event, we explored the city and ate at The Beet Table and The Loring Place with Kristen, DŌ’s owner. Highly recommend both restaurants!

A couple months ago, I posted about a fun cooking demo event and book signing. The cooking demo was a ticketed event with a limited group due to space. We baked giant chocolate chip cookies together and walked through the entire process all inside the fabulous DŌ bakery. What a morning!

25% of the ticket sales were donated to a non-profit that’s very special to me, For Goodness Cakes. 🙂

Afterwards I signed cookbooks, which was open to everyone. This event was such a fun success that we’re thinking about doing it again in December. Since the space is limited for the cooking demo, I could do two demos! Would you be interested?

Forever my favorite cookie dough flavor: Heavenly. ♥ ♥ ♥

Have you ever been to DŌ?? We got to spend a lot of time with the DŌ team and everyone is just as sweet as their confections. What a weekend!

Hello, Cookie Dough Cookbook

Speaking of DŌ and the fabulous owner, Kristen Tomlan, I absolutely have to spill the beans on her upcoming cookbook, Hello, Cookie Dough. Kristen has become one of my dearest friends and she let me see a sneak peek at the book earlier this year. I’m being 100% honest when I say that this is the cookbook OF THE DECADE. Wow. Edible cookie dough that you can eat or bake into cookies, plus dozens of baked treats all centered around cookie dough. She teaches us how to use heat-treated flour so all cookie dough is safe to consume. Gorgeous pictures for every single recipe and plenty of baking tips, tricks, and advice too.

She’s incredibly inspiring. I’m always honored to support fellow hardworking women!

The book comes out in October, but you can pre-order at the sale price now. I’m very excited to share a recipe and more about the book around the release date!

Sprinkle Running Shoes

There was a little sprinkle of happy in the mail last week. After a reader sent me a link to these sprinkle sneaks, I immediately ordered them. I’ve seriously never purchased something offline quicker. I’m a runner and have trusted Brooks for my running shoes for over 10 years. That being said, I don’t find these best for running. Compared to their Glycerin, in which I usually run, the sprinkle shoes felt a little clunky. For me, they’re more of a casual every day shoe. But that’s fine with me because I’ve literally been wearing these EVERY DAY.

The shoelaces! How can you not smile?

August Baking Challenge

August Baking Challenge recipe: Vertical Cake

August’s baking challenge recipe is definitely one of my favorites so far. It’s a more difficult recipe, which is why I love it. Depending on your skill level, you are truly challenging yourself with this one! It look me weeks of recipe testing to perfect it, so learn from my mistakes and follow the recipe closely. This one is so fun to serve, too.

I LOVE seeing your vertical creations this month!!

Thanks for reading and have a relaxing weekend!

  1. I met Jude when you guys came to Pittsburgh a few years ago for a signing. Sending him lots of of virtual scritches. ❤️

    1. I hope your dog has healthy outcome for his treatment…sending healing vibes! Also, I would love to go to a cooking demo if you came to Boston. Hope to meet you sometime!

  2. Very sorry to hear about your dog’s health. Sending good thoughts.
I was at your book signing at DO but missed out on getting into the demo. I would definitely be interested in another opportunity!

  3. Okay, so I am now tearing up after reading about your handsome boy, Jude. I fell in love with his wonderful smile the very first time I saw a picture of him on your blog. It is easy to tell he is a special dog and family member. He seems to look happy in every photo and I imagine his personality is just as chill and sweet. The photo of Noelle, Jude and Franklin is priceless and one to cherish for sure.
I do hope Jude has many, many more days to share with his family but know that even when he has to leave, he really never will. I strongly believe the spirit and energy of our furry family members stays with us long after they are gone…you just have to look for the signs. Noelle will always have a four legged angel watching over her.

    1. This is the sweetest comment, bringing tears to my eyes. Jude is always so cheerful. Such a happy boy! I’m framing the picture of those 3 for sure.

  4. I was so sad to hear about Jude, Sally. Pets really are members of the family. I hope he has a speedy recovery. That picture of Noelle with the 2 pups is the sweetest! ❤️ I’d love if you would do another NYC demo in the future! I tried to sign up for this past one, but it filled up immediately!

  5. We ate at DO while in NYC last summer and loved it. Such a fun treat! I’m also so sorry to hear that your doggy is sick and hope that he feels better after his surgery.

  6. I’m so sorry to hear about Jude. We lost our beloved dog to cancer just a month ago and it’s still painful to talk and think about, so I can completely empathize with what you’re going through. Wishing him (and your family) the best of luck and more happy years together.

  7. I am so, so sorry to hear about Jude. I am hoping he is recovering well from surgery and what you hear back on the tumor is hopeful/good. I know he is part of your family and so important to you all!

  8. Thinking of Jude and you and hoping that his recovery includes many more years with your family. I would be interested in demos and those shoes are so fun!!!

  9. Sorry to hear about your Jude. Our last cat lived two more years after being diagnosed with cancer and other medical issues. Prayers to you and your family. Love the shoes! Looking forward to the new email series. Always looking for new tips and tricks to improve my baking skills.

  10. My heart aches for you, knowing what the future will bring. I lost my 10.5 year old mixed breed Lab/Pointer/Great Dane/Pit Bull, last August 31, to bone cancer. I held her in my arms and told her how much I loved her and that she would take a piece of my heart when she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. Blessedly, Mariska’s vet is very compassionate, so she gave my girl a sedative and let it take effect before injecting the drug that stopped her heart. I cradled Mariska as she took her last breath.

It’s been almost a year now and I miss Mariska’s presense every day. She was my princess and a faithful canine companion. I was and am still heartbroken.

It’s is my hope and prayer that Jude overcomes his illness and that he lives a long and happy life. I know you love Jude as much as I loved Mariska. When it is his time, may he pass peacefully, in his sleep, safe in the sanctuary of his forever home.

  11. I’m so sorry to hear about your pup and so glad you caught it early. We had a sweet old puppy who had surgery and then chemo which kept the cancer at bay for about a year. Time is precious and that extra time we had with him was absolutely priceless.

I hope Jude has many more years of ball fetching & rolling in the grass.

  12. Sally, I am so sorry to hear about your sweet Jude’s illness. I do hope that they got to it early enough.
For those of us who love our pets like family members, loosing them is just heartbreaking. Just remember that there is always more love to give and that loving again is something to look forward to as you look back with love on those who will always be in your heart.
    Sending love.

  13. Sending lots of love and ear scritches for Jude! Do you ever bake goodies for your pups?
And where do we find out where you will be for a book signing? Ever plan on coming to Atlanta area??? (please, pretty please, with sprinkles on top???)

  14. Sally, please come to Ohio or Kentucky!! I am going to order that cookie dough cookbook. I have a friend who can eat a sleeve of dough at one sitting! 🙂 Sending virtual licks and ear scratchies to Jude!

  15. Sally,
I was so sorry to hear about sweet Jude. I hope the pup is healing well following surgery.
Loved the picture with all the mixers. Baking with you would have been a blast. Let me know if you’d like to come to Rennes and bake!

  16. Hi sally.
I am sorry to hear about Jude.
Although I have never met your dog Jude
or Franklin, I send my love to Jude and your family in this tough time that you all are going through. I hope that Jude heals good from surgery.
I look forward to your new baking series emails.
And could you please do a few more sprinkled video series ‘ with different recipes I liked the first series of those videos you did. I would love to see a lot more of them as well.

  17. Reading what you wrote about Jude brought tears to my eyes… Our pets are our babies. I hope he gets better in no time and plays with Franklin for many more years.

  18. Sally, So sorry to hear about sweet Jude. I learned recently that my 13 year old cat has Lymphoma. I’m so saddened, just like you are. Dread the day that I have to say good bye, but until then, enjoying every precious day with her, as I’m sure you are, too. Praying for Jude and your family.

  19. Yes! More demos in NYC – Would definitely be interested!
Looove Do – they usually have a booth at the Bryant Park Winter Village which is super easy for us to get to – yum!
Also sending good vibes to your pup!

    1. So happy to read this! I’ll definitely post about any future cooking demos here on my blog 🙂 And thanks for the well wishes for Jude!

  20. In so very so try to hear about Jude. My husband and me lost our 12 year old yellow lab in April due to cancer. The vet have him 2 weeks to live and he was happy and comfortable for 4 months. Fingers crossed that Jude has years left, doggies are the best and thank you for sharing.

  21. I’m so sad to hear about Jude. Sending him so many positive healing thoughts and strength to you and your family.

  22. So sorry to hear about Jude’s health and the heartbreak is causes for your family. Sending love and thoughts of sunshine your way.

I’d love to come to one of your cooking demos!!! … especially if you visited a local bakery a little closer to my home. I could recommend a few of my favorites in Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio 🙂

  23. I’m so sorry to hear about your sweet Jude. I hope he is feeling better soon and will be with your family as long as he can. Its so hard to have a beloved furry member of the family be unwell.

  24. I’m so very sorry to hear about Jude. Have you started giving him CBD oil? It can be very beneficial for dogs with cancer. Make sure it is high quality. A friend gave to her dogs and it definitely prolonged their life.

  25. So sorry that Jude is unwell, pets are four legged children that you don’t have to send off to college….please find comfort that Jude knows he is loved beyond measure. Love that you share your story.. you are one special woman who knows how to Bake…love your recipes and all that you do for your baking friends!

  26. So sorry about your precious dog; being hopeful is the best medicine. I, too, have an aging pet, Vin Scully (greyhound). It seems his once dark body gets grayer every day. He is plagued with health issues so I sympathize with your concerns.
I want to take this opportunity to say I am enthralled with your blog. Everything I have tried has met or exceeded my expectations. Your notes following every recipe are extremely helpful and make a difference in the success of a baking creation. You are the best!

    1. Thank you so much, Linda- I’m sending thoughts to you and Vin, too. I’m thrilled you enjoy so many of my recipes- thank you for baking them!

  27. So sorry to hear about Jude. Sending lots of healing vibes! Thanks for the update. I wish I could get to your cooking demos but it is an 8 hour drive from where I am! There’s a Canada’s Baking and Sweets Show in Toronto. I wish you were able to come to Canada! I do hope to take a trip to one of your book signings and cooking demos one day soon enough. Sounds like lots of fun!
