Franklin

Stepping out of the kitchen today so a new family member can have his formal introduction!

Everyone, meet Franklin.

Kevin and I rescued this little guy a couple weeks ago– and I’ve been dying to spill the beans about him. But first must come a slew of cute puppy photos followed by even more mama snuggles. Of course.

We’ve been wanting a 2nd dog for over a year now, but this past month felt like the right time to adopt. Jude is extremely territorial in our current house, but not too familiar with our new house just yet. After talking to our vet about 500 times, we decided moving into a new home where Jude may be a little more welcoming is the best time to add a 4th family member.

I went searching and that’s when I found our Franklin. (Previously named Martin. I like Franklin better. Like a complete weirdo, I’ve been thinking of a new puppy name for about 2 years. I’d tell you I’m a crazy dog mom, but something tells me you’ve already figured that out by now…? Franklin just seems much more fitting for this stud muffin!!!) Franklin came from Bourbon County Rescue. He’s a shepherd/rottie mix, about 12 weeks old. We’re told his mama was found wandering down a deserted country road this past February, possibly looking for a place to have her puppies.

When we first met Franklin, Kevin picked him right up, I was uncontrollably using my dog voice/melting into a love puddle, then Franklin let out this huge sigh and just melted into our arms. Like, ahhhh. Home sweet home. ♥

Franklin is a whopping 13 lbs, exactly 100 less than his giant redheaded big bro.

The two of them together? Well, it’s interesting. I researched it like a psycho and obviously called our vet another 500 times about the behavior between the two. It’s only been a couple weeks, so they definitely aren’t friends yet. Franklin follows Jude everywhere, while Jude just ignores him like the diva he usually is.

Just like this, actually.

Still smiling, though. Always smiling.

Franklin is a determined little guy! His body moves quicker than his legs so when he tries to run, he just stumbles all over the place. He loves discovering new things and is very thoughtful and generous, often bringing me wet leaves and pieces of mulch when I call his name outside. Franklin also loves to cuddle and will let you know he’s sleeping when he begins to snore like an old man.

Nicknames for Franklin: Benjamin Franklin, Frankie, Franklinstein, Frances…

That last one is only for when he’s being fancy.

I’m over the moon with Franklin and when I asked you about fun dog-friendly birthday activities, I secretly meant friendly for TWO dogs! I’m excited to unveil Franklin on Jude’s instagram account (I understand how weird I am) and I’ll happily share mountains of Franklin photos with you on the regular.

Until then, here’s one more. 🙂

I CAN’T HANDLE THE CUTENESS!!

  1. OMG!!!!! He’s so cute!!!!! This makes me want a dog so bad. Unfortunately, my apartment complex doesn’t allow dogs. I’m living vicariously through you! Enjoy him, he’s precious. <3

  2. He is so stinkin cute!! Thanks for sharing, I’m currently refraining from going and finding myself another puppy!

  3. Soooo Sweet! Congratulations!! I am sure that in time he and Jude will be best buds!! Just make sure to give Jude some extra loving so that he doesn’t feel like he is being replaced!

  4. Congrats on the new family addition and he is adorable. Won’t be long before Franklin is snuggling with his big brother Jude. Rescuing is one of the most loving and kind things we can do for our furry friends. Enjoy and can’t wait to see updates!

  5. Congrats, Franklin is a cutie. I am sure Jude will come to enjoy his little side kick. Looking forward to lts of puppy pictures. Enjoy your newest family member. Too cute.

  6. No need to explain your doggy love….I totally get it because I am a cat person who is the same way about her two adorable furry children. When we first go them I was over the moon and my FB page was flooded too. I am sure many of my non-cat loving friends put me on “HIDE” lol. I understand the concern for bringing a new pup into a family where one was already top dog. I had a former situation with my two cats before and it always made me sad how they just ‘co-existed’ never played, slept, bathed together. So my current two was all planned out…get two kittens at the same time. And they were playful fools. But God had a different plan and one had to be put down shortly after we bonded. Although we ran out and got another kitten who was only a few month’s older….it’s never perfect. I just always make sure when I have a kitty in my lap and I am using my sing-song syrupy sweet voice to one over how much “mommy wuvs my baby boy…” I look if the princess is looking….and have to make sure I lovingly blink how I love her too….Gawd, being a sap is so much work! LOL

  7. I think you have another stud muffin on your hands — he’s adorable.

Now you’ve got me dreaming about having a second dog! But I don’t think Peaches the cat would be impressed.

  8. He is adorable and nothing like a puppy to gets lots of lovin!  How you kept him a secret is beyond me!  I wouldn’t have been able to contain my excitement!  Congrats on your new addition.  I am sure he will interfere somewhat with your baking!!!!

  9. Absolutely darling!!!!!  I never thought I could fall in love with an intimidating dog like a shephard but my granddog is full breed and the minute I laid eyes on him it was love at first sight.  Franklin looks a lot like him when a pup.  You are going to have sooooo much fun.

I hope you create some dog treat recipes:)  Our now three year old will still not eat peanut butter.  I’m an avid baker and would love to bake for him when he is in town.

    P.S.  Happy potty training:)

  10. Welcome to your gorgeous new fur-baby – look forward to more photos
    – from one fellow dog-mummy to another xx

  11. He’s adorable, Sally!!!! What a big cuddly bundle of puppy love. Congratulations! I think Jude will come around when he figures out how much fun it will be having a little brother to hang out with. Can’t wait to follow his adventures, too. 🙂

  12. Ohhhh myyyyy goodness. I love him! And I love the name even more! I totally understand the ‘dog voice’ cuteness….tell me, does he have puppy breath? Oh, I bet he does! So I’m a crazy dog Mom too and totally want a 3rd! Been pondering on that for a year or so. I have a 6 year old Golden Retreiver, Cheyenne, and Sadie of course, my (almost) 9 year old Yellow Labby. Love dogs, they ARE your kids! Does Kevin give you “Mother’s Day” cards from Jude? I get 3 cards for Mother’s day! From the chickens, rabbits and dogs! It’s a ritual now. I’m so happy for you Sally. Write and Journal about him and use ALL the dog Mom voices you want! Enjoy Franklin.

    1. YES to puppy breath!
And yes to mother’s day cards. But my mother-in-law sends them to me from Jude. We’re all very obsessed with dogs here. HA!!

  13. Oh Sally I am so happy for you and your family.  I work at a maternity rescue shelter and nothing warms my heart more than adoption day.  This is the day when the puppies are ready to go to their forever homes.  Bless you for being a rescue mama!

  14. Omg!!!! I’m obsessed w how cute Franklin is!!!! As a mother of 3 dogs I get your devotion !!  Nothing can fill your heart like snuggling w your dog!  I wish I could figure out how to post a pic of my snuggling dogs!!!
Franklin is a lucky little pup !!!  Homemade dog treats???

  15. I basically smiled the whole time I read this. Franklin is adorable, and I’m sure in time he and Jude will get along just fine

  16. FrankinPup is darling. Jude will be won over by the little Frankster, just will take time. Congrats on being new parents.

    Jude ( too)

  17. Congratulations on the newest addition to your family!  As a “crazy” fur-baby Mom myself, I think everything you are doing and feeling is absolutely spot on.  Enjoy every day, they grow up so fast.  Hope to see lots of pictures of your two little ones, and I’m sure Jude will turn into a wonderful big brother.

  18. Congrats to you and Kevin on the addition to your family. Franklin…awesome name…is adorable. Rescue dogs are the best…knowing their back stories makes the adoption so much more special. This little guy has no idea how fortunate he is to have you are his human mom.
His big bro will adjust…how could he not with that cute little fur ball fallowing him around everywhere? Besides, judging from the size of his paws and his Rottie genes, he will be eye to eye with his brother in no time!

  19. SO CUTE! I’m dying over his baby belly in the picture of you guys in the car! I adopted my 2 dogs at Operation Ava/Saved Me at 4th & Poplar, 3 years apart. They definitely weren’t friends at first, but now, a year later, they are inseparable! I’m sure over time Franklin and Jude will grow closer 🙂

  20. He’s SO adorable and so small I can’t handle it. That picture of him and Jude together ignoring each other is pure gold – you should frame that one! I hope he and Jude adjust well together; there’s nothing better than your two favourite pets loving each other too 🙂

  21. OOH MY GOSH! He’s just the cutest little thing!! Congrats on the new addition! So adorable and thanks for sharing Franklin with us, I can’t wait to see more photos of him! 😀

  22. Congratulations on the new family member, Sally! Thanks so much for adopting! I take in the dumped, lost and deserted cats and dogs on my rural road (I’m up to 6 cats (one of those lost her elderly owner so I brought her into the fold) and 4 dogs) plus my lab and two chickens. I can tell you that it will just take a little time for Jude to warm up to the new member. Some of my dogs welcome the newbies like champs, others just avoid them or ignore them at first, but always do eventually come around. At this point, it’s mostly just like “Oh look, Mom brought in another one….” The young ones take some getting used to with all that energy and potty training stuff when you are out of practice, but it’s also nice to have that young blood too, to liven up the place and discover the new personality within. Looking forward to watching Franklin grow and him and Jude becoming buds!

    1. Thanks Cheri. I know Jude will come around. It’s just hard because he’s used to being the only pup! And is the most mellow pup ever– and Franklin– well, he’s a burst of energy and rowdiness!

  23. Aww he’s adorable!! Congrats on this cuddly adorableness that FRanklin is! I especially love Franklinstein, made me giggle out loud 😀 Can’t wait to see even more photos and hear about your doggie adventures 🙂
