MARCH BAKING CHALLENGE

Welcome to the 50th Sally’s Baking Challenge!

March 2021 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: French Macarons

Can you believe we’ve been doing this for 50 months? Does anyone remember participating in the very first Sally’s Baking Challenge back in 2017?

This is a very exciting month, so I’m assigning a highly requested challenge recipe for the celebration. French Macarons have been the #1 requested Sally’s Baking Challenge recipe for the past few years. Do they require precision and concentrated effort? Absolutely. Are they manageable for home bakers? Absolutely. I can’t wait for you to try them!

How to Join Sally's Baking Challenge

  1. Recipe: I publish a new challenge recipe on the 1st of each month. Sign up for Sally’s Baking Challenge emails so you’re alerted as soon as a new challenge recipe is published.
  2. Bake: Bake the recipe during that month.
  3. Send: Share your recipe photo with us via email: [email protected]. By emailing your recipe photo, you are automatically entered in the baking challenge. Feel free to share on social media using #sallysbakingchallenge and tagging me (@sallysbakeblog), but the only way to guarantee you are in the running is sending your entry via email.

Sally’s Baking Challenge usually ends on the day prior to the last day of the month. However, moving forward, we will be publishing these posts on the 1st– the same day we publish the recipe. The challenges will now end on the last day of the month at 5pm eastern.

Let’s Review the February Baking Challenge

February 2020 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Chocolate Soufflé

All of your chocolate soufflés were incredible. I was so happy to see well over 1,000 bakers try their hand at this classic French dessert, many of you baking them for the 1st time ever. The general feedback was that making chocolate soufflé is much more manageable than you ever realized, which is really what these baking challenges are all about!

One of our favorite recipe reviews came from reader Jessica:

“This recipe is fantastic!! I was nervous to try something like this, but the recipe made each step really clear and I was able to successfully make a dessert I never thought I could. The video also helped a lot; I watched it several times to make sure I understood the techniques involved. I used 7 ounce ramekins because that’s what I have, and they turned out great. I will definitely make these again!”

We gathered as many chocolate soufflé emailed photo entries as we could and included them below.

  1. Congrats Stephanie! All the souffles look great. I have been talking about attempting macarons for awhile so excited that they are the March challenge!

    1. Congrats Jennifer! I don’t even know a Stephanie so unsure why that name popped out….maybe too excited about the macarons:)

  2. Congratulations Stephanie, I couldn’t find my ramekins, so didn’t get to try the soufflé Hoping for macaron success!

  3. They all look amazing! I’ve just received a macaron silpat mat for my birthday so I was planning on making them! 🙂

  4. Congrats, Stephanie. I am impressed with all those who entered and all the lovely pictures of the delicious looking Souffle’s. Sally, how does it make you feel to know that you inspire so many folks who share your love of cooking and baking?

    1. It’s honestly been so incredible to watch the baking challenges grow over the past 4 years. I couldn’t be more thankful for the high level of participation, especially during months where readers say that they would have NEVER tried that recipe had I not assigned it. It’s amazing to witness. This tradition has become my favorite part of the month!!

  5. My French students love macarons! I am up for the March challenge!!

  6. Congratulations Stephanie! I can’t believe I looked at every single picture and I am amazed at the turnout. I just said to myself…wow….this is incredible….Sally has inspired over 1000 people to make chocolate soufflé and I am one of them. I don’t do all the baking challenges for various reasons, but when I do, I always feel so accomplished. Thank you Sally for being such an enthusiastic blogger, down to earth and genuine and for taking the time to break down all your recipes into manageable steps while giving the reasons for why you are doing what you are doing. I am not a big fan of macarons and I have had them in Paris too. I have many family members who love them, so the pressure is on.

  7. Congratulations Stephanie your souffle’s are beautiful! I have never made a souffle so I can now check that off my to do baking list. March’s challenge is another I have not made, so here I go checking off another on my to do list. This was a great recipe to make and even better to eat and share. My friends always ask what are you doing for the next challenge.

  8. Thank you Sally for challenging us! As someone who is my own worst critic, I had to be happy with my creation so it took me four tries to get it right! My family wasn’t complaining, though. They all agreed my 4th time was the best yet!

When I purchased the ramekins, I also purchased a macaron kit! How fortuitous was that? So excited to try this.

  9. I’m so excited about this challenge, I have always wanted to try macarons! And yes I do remember the first challenge of lava cakes! I can’t believe this is number fifty and I have done every single one!

    1. Can’t wait to try this challenge. I’ve had macarons in Paris (absolute heaven) and have always wanted to try making them at home but inevitably have backed down….leaving it to the professionals. Well no more!!! Game on…….

  10. Congratulations! This was a fun challenge. Yours look amazing!

  11. Shelly Flanigan says:

I am so excited to try these again. I tried them a few years ago with a Canadian student living with us. They were ok, but not great. Hopefully this time they will be better. Also, I participate in our local Farmer’s Markey, so if they turn out, I think they will be a big hit.

  12. Laurie Chaplen says:

Congrats Stephanie. The soufflés were a challenge. I’m so excited to try the Macaroons as I took a class with a friend and they are may favorite cookie. I’m excited to try new flavors of the cookies.

  13. Congratulations, Jennifer!!! Your soufflés look awesome!!!
I can’t believe we get to do macarons!!! I’m so excited!! I just tried to make some on Valentine’s Day for the first time and it was a disaster. Afterwards, I realized the recipe I was doing didn’t even have any flavoring in it.lol Really?????? It didn’t even occur to me when I was making them. I was just so nervous to even be attempting them at all.lol I can’t wait to see the recipe!!!

  14. What wonderful pictures. Congrats to all.

  15. Kristin Inagaki says:

So excited to make these. These challenges are so fun. I love to bake but the challenges really help to grow and try many new things.

  16. Hi,
The link for the march challenge recipe just keeps going to the March Challenge announcement page and not the recipe page.

  17. Lucy Cavanaugh says:

Why is everyone saying Congrats Stephenie when it says that Jennifer won? Were there two winners?

    1. Hi Lucy, I noticed that and we’re not sure. The winner was Jennifer and she has received her gift card.

  18. Goodness! I made macarons twice in Feb! Guess I’ll just have to make more.

  19. The best and most delicious recipe! Are we surprised?! Sally does it again!

  20. Thank you all for the lovely comments about my soufflés. I was so honored to have won. I’m still in shock!!! Thank you so much Sally ❤️ I love how we’re able to attempt so many new things. Looking forward to all of the future challenges. Happy baking everyone ❤️

  21. Lisa Postlewait says:

Your easy to follow directions not only gave me confidence to try macarons, but they came out perfectly. Thank you so much!

  22. We made these today as something to do for spring break and they turned out great! My 7th grade nephew is really in to baking and we had a blast! First time doing the challenge and we are so glad we did! Thank you!

  23. Can I make your shell recipe and fill it with whatever I want?

    1. Trina @ Sally's Baking Addiction says:

      Definitely!
