Have you ever had a banana whip before?

What’s a banana whip, you ask? There’s a little spot on the boardwalk that sells pure frozen banana whips. Frozen banana chunks blended into ice cream consistency… and it tastes EXACTLY like vanilla soft serve.

I make it at home all the time. Peel your brown spotty bananas, chop them up, freeze the chunks, and blend them. Boom! Healthy 1 ingredient vegan vanilla soft serve. ↓

1 Ingredient Frozen Banana Soft Serve

This frozen banana whip is the base for my strawberry banana milkshakes. I make these fruity milkshakes all the time.  They’re one of my favorite afternoon snacks, especially when all I want is something sweet and refreshing. Sometimes I add different fruits to the banana base, but it’s usually strawberry.  I like pink drinks. 😉

Thick strawberry milkshakes are a weakness of mine.  But let’s face it, I’d rather eat my calories in chocolate chunk cookies than drink them.  You can have a strawberry milkshake that tastes exactly like the kind from your favorite drive-thru – and it’s made from pure fruit! Pretty hard to believe, right?!

The milkshakes are super thick, practically too thick for my pink chevron straws! Courtesy of Sweets & Treats Boutique. Love ’em.

The milkshakes are made from frozen banana chunks, a few fresh strawberries, and a splash of milk.  You may keep them vegan by using soy or almond milk.  Make sure the bananas you freeze are extra ripe.  I usually buy a few bunches of bananas simply for the purpose of letting them rot and freezing the chunks to make milkshakes. 🙂

The riper the bananas, the sweeter they are, and the better your strawberry milkshakes will taste.

Sort of like how banana bread works, too. The more ripe your bananas, the better the bread will be.  Looking for banana bread?  You can’t miss my favorite banana bread recipe.

These milkshakes are a non-recipe recipe.  All you’re doing is blending three ingredients together!  But it’s incredible how amazing they taste considering how easy they are to make.  Simple, fresh, healthy ingredients make the best milkshakes and smoothies.

I always feel good drinking these. 3 ingredients, 5 minutes, done!!

Smooth, creamy thick strawberry milkshakes made from only 3 healthy ingredients.

  • 3 large bananas, peeled, cut into chunks, & frozen
  • 1/4 cup vanilla almond milk (or regular milk)
  • 8 medium strawberries, sliced in half

  1. Make sure you have a strong, powerful blender that will blend up the frozen banana. I like this Ninja or this Vitamix.
  2. Blend the frozen banana chunks and milk together until thick, creamy, and smooth – about 4 minutes. Scrape down the sides of the blender as needed.
  3. Add the strawberries and continue to blend until smooth.

  1. Oh yumm, I make banana whip all the time but I never thought of using it to make a smoothie! I can’t wait to try this.
It’s so funny you mentioned your banana bread too because I just used one of your recipes to make banana bread last night…I couldn’t decide between the cinnamon swirl and the dark chocolate raspberry so I combined them and did the cinnamon swirl with chocolate chips lol it was delicious!

    1. Hi Jessica! I’m so glad that you made that banana bread. Cinnamon Swirl + dark chocolate sounds incredible. 🙂 And banana whip in smoothies is the best. You have to try it!

  2. Banana soft serve is my absolute favourite healthy snack! It’s kind of my excuse to eat ice cream everyday. This shake is healthy, yummy, and basic and that’s the best part! Love those straws and I wish we had a place here that served banana whip!

  3. Strawberry & banana is my favorite combo for milkshakes and smoothies. And I love your tip for frozen banana whip, I’m going to have to give that a try! I am still waiting for those strawberry shortcake cupcakes…can’t wait to see them! 🙂

  4. Hi Sally,

Just found this blog about a week ago. I love it, especially because I am diabetic and a sugarholic. I can’t wait to try a lot of your healthy sweet treats.

I am getting healthier myself but can’t go sweet-less and I have re-started Weight Watchers (on my own-no meetings). Do you have a place on this site with nutrition info for each recipe. I use it to calculate WW points but especially to determine the carbs I am consuming at any given time.

Could spend–who am I kidding–have spent hours here already!!

    1. Hi Joy! I’m so glad you found my website and are loving it so far. I do not post nutritional information on my website since its focus is not nutrition, jut sharing my love for baking. Thanks for the sweet comment – it made my day.

  5. I have a strawberries and cream smoothie on my site and this reminds me to remake it! Your pics are so vibrant and pretty, Sally! My pics are a couple years old in that post and don’t quite pop as much. I love the pink straw you used, too 🙂 And now…I’m thirsty!

  6. I love making these kind of treats! Your pictures are so fun – I love those straws. Banana whip is the best and right now, with all this heat, it sounds amazing! I would’ve made it this afternoon, but guess who forgot to freeze her bananas?! Now I’m, doubly motivated and off to the freeze some bananas!

    1. I always have a bag of frozen bananas in the freezer ready for these milkshakes! Let me know when you have your frozen banans and make these, I think you’ll love them Mary Frances!

  7. I love the pink touches in this post! So gorgeous and summery. Strawberry is my very favorite ice cream ever (even more than cake batter from Coldstone, which is an amazing flavor), and this milkshake looks fabulous! I had no idea bananas could be made to be like soft-serve…what a great idea, with so many options for lovely summer fruits.

  8. I love making ice cream with bananas!! It really does taste just like soft serve. I never thought to use it as a base for a milkshake, that is pure genius. I have a feeling I will be making lots of different fruit milkshakes this summer. Thanks for the great idea Sally!

  9. I guess we both had healthy cold summer treats on the mind today!

Your pics are so pretty! I just love that strawberry shot and those straws are so cute! I want some! I also on one of these shakes! They are perfect and I LOVE the strawberry banana combo! It is on of my favorite smoothies!

    1. Thank you for the compliment on the photos, Tieghan! I have a lot of trouble shooting drinks sometimes. I’m glad these turned out! 🙂
