Hawaiian Pizza

Classic Hawaiian Pizza combines pizza sauce, cheese, cooked ham, and pineapple. This crowd-pleasing pizza recipe starts with my homemade pizza crust and is finished with a sprinkle of crispy bacon. It’s salty, sweet, cheesy, and undeniably delicious!

It doesn't get much better than Homemade Hawaiian Pizza. Tropical paradise for dinner!

Hawaiian pizza is the most underrated pizza on the planet. Combining pineapple, cheese, and ham, Hawaiian pizza is sweet, salty, and cheesy all in 1 bite. It’s just the BEST pizza variety! We’re using my homemade pizza crust and adding bacon on top. Bacon isn’t a traditional Hawaiian pizza topping, but everything goes with bacon… right?

Homemade Pizza Dough

Let’s talk homemade pizza crust. I’ve been making this pizza dough every week for the past several years. There’s a reason why I keep going back to it:

  • The recipe is perfect for bread beginners
  • Only 6 ingredients required
  • Most of the time is hands-off
  • Crisp edges & fluffy interior
  • So, so flavorful.

It’s the best homemade pizza crust. I always use Red Star Platinum in my pizza dough because I have the best results. The Platinum line is fantastic; its careful formula strengthens your dough and makes making working with yeast simple.

Homemade Pizza Dough Video Tutorial

Here is a video tutorial for the homemade pizza dough.

This homemade pizza dough freezes well, thaws easily, and puffs up beautifully when baked. It’s a thick-style crust recipe that can hold an impressive amount of toppings. If you have a “more is better” attitude about pizza toppings, this homemade pizza crust is for you!

Homemade Hawaiian Pizza

Hawaiian Pizza Toppings

Use fresh or canned pineapple chunks. For the ham, you can use either ham or Canadian bacon. The two are similar in taste and texture, but Canadian bacon is a little leaner. And they come from different parts of the pig. (Just in case you were looking for a ham lesson today.) I usually use Canadian bacon. Cooked bacon crumbles are optional, but they add awesome flavor and crunch. You can also add sliced onions too.

Another lesson for you: Hawaiian pizza is not actually Hawaiian. It originated in Canada.

This Classic Hawaiian Pizza is a staple on our Friday nights!!

It’s time to shake up your pizza nights with a tropical twist!

  • Method: Baking
  • Cuisine: American

Description

My pizza dough recipe makes enough for two 12-inch pizzas. Toppings listed are enough for one 12-inch pizza. Freeze the rest of the pizza dough for another time.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 recipe homemade pizza crust
  • 1/2 cup (127g) pizza sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 and 1/2 cups (6oz or 168g) shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup (75g) cooked ham or Canadian bacon, sliced or chopped
  • 1/2 cup (82g) pineapple chunks (canned or fresh)
  • 3 slices bacon, cooked and crumbled

Instructions

  1. Prepare pizza dough through step 5, including preheating the oven to 475°F (246°C). Cover the shaped dough lightly with plastic wrap and allow it to rest as the oven preheats.
  2. To prevent the pizza toppings from making your pizza crust soggy, brush the shaped dough lightly with olive oil. Using your fingers, push dents into the surface of the dough to prevent bubbling. Top the dough evenly with pizza sauce, then add the cheese, ham, pineapple, and bacon.
  3. Bake pizza for 12-15 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with fresh basil, if desired. Slice hot pizza and serve immediately.
  4. Cover leftover pizza tightly and store in the refrigerator. Reheat as you prefer. Baked pizza slices can be frozen up to 3 months. See pizza crust recipe for instructions on freezing the pizza dough.

  1. SO exciting that your wedding is SO close! Mine was only a year and a half ago so I fully remember it! The best day ever – so pumped for you!
Also, this pizza? I love that you posted it on Friday. Hawaiian is my hubs’ fav and your crust sounds perfect! Pinned!

  2. Your pizza crust looks absolutely perfect – with such a big & fluffy crust (the best part!). And sweet and salty pizzas (or anything sweet and salty let’s be honest) are my favourite! Pineapple is always a big plus for me on top of pizza 🙂 And who knew Hawaiian pizza was invented in Canada!? 😀

Your honeymoon in Hawaii sounds asbolutelyyy fabulous! Have a great weekend! 😀

    1. Thanks Ceara! Sweet + salty pizza is my favorite. I once went to a restaurant where they serve honey with pizza slices. A little drizzle of it on top of all the salty cheese is SO good. Try it if you haven’t yet!

      1. Sounds amazing!!! 🙂 Will have to try it! Maple syrup drizzled on top would also be ahhh-maazing!!!

  3. You are super close now! I remember having the same feeling when I got married a year and a half ago! Congratulations, Sally! By the way, this pizza is amazing. I could go for a slice this morning – yum! Happy Friday!! 🙂

  4. Hawaiian pizza is my favorite, Sally! This looks absolutely amazing. Perfect pizza to start out the three day weekend!

  5. Looks so good! I am MoH at my best friend’s wedding…on September 20. And she and her soon-to-be husband are honeymooning in…Hawaii! Uncanny!!

  6. My absolute favorite pizza topping is pineapple. Basically if it doesn’t have pineapple on it, I don’t even really want it! Totally am all about the pineapple so this looks fabulous to me! Pinned!

22 days. CONGRATS. So, so, so close!! 🙂

  7. Your hawaiian pizza looks so amazing! Ham and pineapple are my favourite toppings. I am very tempted to try your recipe! 🙂

  8. I can not wait for your next cookbook. Your first one is my absolute favorite! And the pictures are awesome! Thank you for your amazing blogs 🙂

  9. Thank you, Sally! Pineapple and Canadian bacon are my #1 choice in pizza. Looking forward to trying your crust. I’ve had great success with many of your recipes. Congrats on the upcoming nuptials, Hawaii is perfect choice for honeymoon! My husband and I visited 4 ports there last year and Maui and Kauai were top locations we’d like to return for extended visits. Will be looking forward to lots of honeymoon pics!

  10. Yum, Yum, i love homemade pizza will make this for dinner tonight. Enjoy hawaii. My hubby and I lived there for 5 years when we were first married.
Both our children were born there. We just celebrated 21 years yesterday. Enjoy your time there and we will enjoy this pizza.

  11. This looks amazing. I swear every time I crave something, you seem to have a recipe that day for what it is aha!! I really really want a pizza for dinner and this recipe just made me want one even more!!

  12. Pineapple, ham, bacon….gosh what is not to like here? And that crust….looks terrific! At 57, I am pretty darn new to baking and cooking, spoiled for years by a husband who liked to cook. But the cooking bug finally hit me, and I am trying my hand at everything. Working with yeast is something I haven’t tackled yet, and I am not sure why. But looking at this crust certainly makes me want to give it a try! This recipe is going to go on my “to make list”!!! I’ll get there eventually. Also on that list was the triple salted caramel cupcakes (loved them) and the salted caramel cheesecake dip (devoured by guests). So, I will give this a shot someday.

Congratulations on your wedding! Sounds like your honeymoon will be a blast. Enjoy!

    1. Thanks Barbara! It sounds like you love salty/sweet, so you will just love this pizza. Those triple salted caramel cupcakes are the BEST. I need to make them again soon.

  13. Every time I see you pizza dough I tell myself I MUST MAKE IT! I have yet to try it because of the busy summer but now things are calming down. I can’t wait! Thanks for all your great recipes and pictures!

  14. Yay! Go Canada! I love hawaiian pizza – but I don’t like a lot of pineapple… I’m a picky eater… It’s kinda random, but is it true that you don’t really have Ketchup Chips in the US?

    1. Hmm. Maybe? I don’t know, I don’t think I’ve seen those. But ketchup is at the bottom of my food pyramid (seriously!) so I would LOVE them.

  15. Hawaii is definitely on my “Must Vacation Here” list. Anywhere tropical pretty much makes the cut, but there’s something about Hawaii which makes it so appealing… I don’t know what it is, but the whole Polynesian thing just takes it up a notch!

I hope you wash this pizza down with a beer or margarita tonight! 😉 Have a good weekend!

  16. Pizza is the best Friday night dinner! And I totally drizzle honey on it now, Sally-style. It’s the best way to have salty and sweet!
This looks delicious. I think it needs to be paired with a cool tropical drink. You’re a month away from some really good ones!

    1. I can’t have pizza (any kind!) without honey now! I’m glad I have you hooked. And umm… bring on the fruity beachy girly drinks!!

  17. OMG never made pizza crust from scratch before… Sounds intimidating but considering it’s going to be my brother’s birthday and his favourite pizza is Hawaiian (also with bacon…) maybe I ought to give it a try 🙂

  18. If i wanted to use the whole recipe for the pizza crust…. what size pan would I use? I only have square pans though so I wanted to use those. I used em last time I made ur pizza dough recipe but the half recipe was a little too small for us.
    Thanks!

  19. Yum! I love your pizza crust; I have two in my freezer right now! Congrats on your wedding & honeymoon, you will have so much fun! My hubby and I went to Kauai for our honeymoon 2 years ago and absolutely loved it 🙂

  20. First of all, so excited for you, Sally! You are going to have a blast in Hawaii! Second, your pizza looks fantastic! The crust is perfect and I see so many pizza recipes on the Internet with flat crust and no edges! We love big and fluffy edges! 🙂 This Hawaiian pizza needs to happen soon! Pinned of course!

  21. “(Just in case you were looking for a ham lesson today.)”

I LOL’ed. Just in case you are ever wondering if your readers laugh out loud, you can always be assured “Lynn does.”

Anywayyyyy… Bacon is always a great idea. This sounds fab.

  22. Congrats on your big day! Mine is coming up in the middle of October and it can’t get here fast enough! My fiance would love your thick crust recipe- totally trying it!

  23. I haven’t eaten meat since I was about 12, but I have to say when I saw your picture I instantly wanted a hawaiian pizza! Yummy! Maybe I’ll give it a go with quorn ham

  24. Hawaii sounds like the perfect honeymoon destination! Loving your Hawaiian pizza and the Canadian bacon and bacon combination:)

  25. Oh my gosh. I should not be visiting your blog when it’s 3 pm and I haven’t had lunch yet. This pizza is killing me. Can’t wait to try it. YUM!

  26. Whaaat? Canadians invented Hawaiian Pizza? Crazy, but who care because Hawaiin Pizza is my favorite, yours look amazing. The next time I make pizza I will be making your crust! It sounds perfect and I love to load on the toppings too 🙂
