August Baking Challenge

Happy happy August! With a new month comes a new Sally’s Baking Challenge. Since it’s the last full month of summer, I have an EASY and FUN recipe for our August Baking Challenge. But before we get there, let’s review what the baking challenge is:


On or around the 1st of every month, I post a new recipe complete with a how-to video, plenty of tips, tricks, and photos. I want you to bake the recipe yourself during that month, then come back and tell me how it went. Share your photos throughout the month using #sallysbakingchallenge on Instagram or email me, tweet me, or upload a photo of your recipe to my Facebook page. If you don’t like a particular flavor in that month’s recipe, there is an alternate challenge recipe. July Baking Challenge recipe: Apple Hand Pies

July 2018 was the highest participation in a baking challenge yet!!!! Thank you so much for joining us this month. From heart-shaped rhubarb hand pies to blueberry lemon, lavender blackberry, and cherry star hand pies, you ROCKED this challenge! Many of you conquered a fear of pie crust and came out of July feeling confident and satisfied, all while having a lot of fun. That’s the goal for the entire baking challenge series!!

Take a look at some of your photos on Instagram. And here’s a bunch that are either there, sent to me, posted on my Facebook page, or in my Facebook group.

August 2018 Baking Challenge: Chocolate Chip Cookie Layer Cake

I went back and forth between chocolate chip cookie layer cake and crème brûlée as the August Baking Challenge, so I created a poll in my Facebook group and chocolate chip cookie layer cake won by a landslide. There were plenty of votes for crème brûlée too, so I published the recipe last week. Crème brûlée will be the ALTERNATE August Baking Challenge recipe. But back to the chocolate chip cookie layer cake! I know many readers are on vacation in August, so I wanted a simple, fun, and carefree recipe for this month’s challenge. Something both kids and adults will enjoy not only preparing, but eating as well. August 4th is also National Chocolate Chip Cookie Day so this was a natural fit. 🙂

Everyone who participates in the August Baking Challenge and shares their photo on my Facebook page, in my Facebook groupemails it to me, or on your public Instagram account using the hashtag #sallysbakingchallenge is automatically entered. My assistants and I will keep track of your photos and randomly select a winner at the end of the month. This giveaway is open to the whole world. Giveaway ends on August 30th 2018. A winner will be selected at random and posted on the September Baking Challenge blog post on August 31st.

  2. The cake looks lovely! I have been asked by my expat friends to make “one of those tall American cakes” that they have seen. They are not huge fan of American buttercream so this looks perfect! Can’t wait to see the recipe!

  5. I love the idea of an easy and fun recipe for the August Challenge! My all-grown-up son is coming home for a visit in two weeks, and he is crazy about chocolate chip ANYTHING. This will be an extra-special dessert in honor of his visit. I can’t wait to try it!!

  9. My son is moving to France in 12 days so I think I will do the alternate August baking challenge of crème brûlée for him before he leaves! I’ve always wanted to try making it and this is the perfect excuse. Plus, now I get to purchase a kitchen torch Win win! Thanks for the inspiration

  12. I have a niece in Colorado (+5k feet) I think this would be an excellent cake for her to try! She has two twin brothers and two more sisters that would just love this! Will it be available for conversions to bake there?

  13. Hi Sally I just ordered the 6 inch cake pans from Amazon…so excited to try this 5 tier beauty! for the frosting what do you think of substituting Nutella for the peanut butter?

    I do love the cake pans and the Chocolate Nutella buttercream was delish with the chocolate chip cookie. When DH saw my layer cake he said “Wow cookie tower” This was a fun and easy challenge Thank you… I will try the Crème Brûlée as that is a favorite of mine…Thanks again for all you do!
