Let’s Review the January Baking Challenge
January 2021 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Homemade Stromboli
I knew this would be a fun and popular baking challenge for January, but never would have guessed the level of participation!! We had over 2,000 participants, one of the most popular Sally’s Baking Challenges ever. The recipe photos poured in within hours of first publishing the recipe. Homemade yeasted dough isn’t always easy, but you took this challenge and added some of the most delicious and creative fillings we’ve ever seen like:
- a Philly cheesesteak inspired stromboli
- filled with chopped meatballs + marinara
- a chicken parmesan inspired stromboli
- roasted red peppers, onions + mozzarella
- a reuben sandwich inspired stromboli
- shredded chicken, buffalo sauce + blue cheese
One of my favorite recipe reviews came from reader Kendra:
“I’ve been wanting a really good stromboli recipe and this is it! I used pepperoni, salami, provolone, mozzarella, green peppers, and fresh mushrooms, then topped with Italian seasoning and fresh parmesan. Insanely delicious! I can’t wait to make this again! Rolling the stromboli is a little tricky but Sally’s directions are very clear and easy to follow so it was no problem. I also made the pizza sauce that Sally mentions. It was very easy and so good!”
We gathered as many homemade stromboli emailed photo entries as we could and included them below. There were literally hundreds!
January Baking Challenge Winner
Challenge winner for January is Heidi who has already been notified.
I made the chocolate souffle for myself and a strawberry one for my husband, as he doesn’t care for chocolate much , but they were both very good and I felt like these were extremely easy to make!
I made the chocolate soufflé recipe and was quite delighted. My first time making soufflés! My ramekins were 8 ounce so mine didn’t rise above the rim. Next time I would double the recipe and use six 8 ounce ramekins. Delicious. I love all of Sally’s recipes that I have tried so far! She is awesome!
What a fabulous idea-baking challenges. I made the chocolate souffle tonight and it was so easy and so delicious. I have never made a souffle before but it was divine. My flatmate inhaled it. Thanks Sally
The soufflé recipe is so tasty! The recipe makes it so much easier than I thought – I have been so intimidated by making a soufflé and you de mystified it! Love love this recipe!
What a bunch of talented bakers. Loved this recipe, even if I made it after 5 EST on the 30th . Time to get started on the soufflé before the deadline. I also might have to buy some ramekins…. congratulations Heidi, and everyone on their baking skills!!
Oh my gosh so many people made stromboli. I’m eagerly waiting to dive into febs challenge soon. ❤️

I’ve never seen so many stromboli’s at once! What a turnout of bakers! 🙂 Would love to know the ingred and measurements for some of the specialty ones like the Philly Cheese steak filling. YUM! Thank you, Sally, for a great recipe and inspiring us to not be afraid of yeast breads. I’m making your bagels today, again, and the dough is rising perfectly! Can’t wait for fresh bagels.
