Sally, Iโve been baking your recipes to perfection for a decade without fail and lately Iโm going very wrong with the bottoms of my cookies burning. Recipes Iโve made dozens of times, burnt bottoms! I moved recently and think itโs my oven because I know to follow the instructions to the letter, so I donโt know how to remedy this! I bought new pans, chill everything overnight, I use cookie scoops to measure accurately, I donโt know what else to do but itโs been a nightmare! Any tips or ideas for me to fix this issue? Itโs like my oven just runs really hot or something- Iโve been trying to cut down 2-3 mins on the bake time which helps but itโs almost like I need to adjust degrees and I have no idea where to start for that. Itโs awful.
Hi Janel! We highly recommend using an in-oven thermometer, so you know the exact temperature of your oven. They’re very inexpensive and make a huge difference! Most ovens are not the temperature they say they are, and it sounds like yours is definitely running hot.
I love your recipes..you are my โgo toโ for any recipe. I have signed up for your regular emails and used to get them.. in the last several months they stopped arriving! I signed up again recently and still not received them. I miss your emails, I canโt understand why they stopped. They are not in my junk or trash or spam folders… am I doing something wrong? Not sure you can help, but wanted to reach out! Than you!
Hi Sally! My sister is a big fan and gets sooo excited when she receives a personalized answer to her comments! She also wants some baking tips and would really love you to email her for a Christmas surprise! This is my email so we can talk! ok83157@djusdstudents.org
Hi Olivia, I’m sorry but Sally doesn’t offer personalized baking tips or anything like that. (Find all her baking tips here!) However, she’s happy to send signed bookplates, which are little labels to stick inside copies of her published cookbooks. Email is better for us to set that up if you’d like to contact us about that: sally@sallysbakingaddiction.com
Hi Melissa, the best cookies for that would be roll-out/cut-out cookies like these sugar cookies. The lemon thumbprint cookies recipe is too soft, yes.
I am interested in trying to make sourdough bread, creating my own starter. Are there any suggestions you can give regarding the type of canister or crock I should use? And are there any starter recipes that you would recommend? Thank you. I truly enjoy your recipes and willingness to teach the novice homecook how to improve the baked results.
I used King Arthur Baking’s website for learning about sourdough baking (and a friend gifted me some of his starter.) I use a 32 ounce mason jar for my starter. You don’t need to buy all the stuff at first. You most likely have the basics in your kitchen. Once you learn what you are doing then buy the stuff (if you want to.) It may seem daunting at first, but there is a lot of info on the web. Good luck!
I am a subscriber, and I received the first email announcing your new t shirts n early November. I lost that email, but I think you offered a discount to subscribers until the end of November. Iโd really like to give some shirts as gifts. Can you resend the original email or send me the code? Thank you!
Great ideas. I’m putting one your shirts on my wish list. I saw the size chart, but just for reference, what size are you wearing in photo above? Also are the shirts 100% cotton and did they shrink for you?
Hi Amy! The shirts are 100% cotton; I find they slightly shrink, but not much. I’m wearing Women’s Small. I also like the unisex sizes for a little more comfy room.
Hi Darlene, how about one of the baking sets under “Curated List of Thoughtful Baking Sets”? Any of those would be a great gift for a baker looking to build up their baking pans and tools. Otherwise, an apron is always a fantastic option!
Hi Peggy! I own a couple bench scraper and my favorite is by the brand OXO. (I love most of their kitchen tools.) Here it is on Amazon, but I think you can purchase it at many kitchen retailers: https://www.amazon.com/OXO-Multi-purpose-Stainless-Scraper-Chopper/dp/B00004OCNJ
I am looking at the reviews on Amazon for the USA Baking sheet you recommended. Many said it warped, became discolored and/or the coating pealed off. Have you had any problem with any of these?
Thank you
Diane
Hi Diane, I’m just seeing your comment/question now so my apologies for the delay. I’ve never had my USA Pans warp before but they can become discolored and peel coating if they’re put in the dishwasher. (Hand wash is recommended.) I also really like Nordic Ware half sheet pans, also linked above.
As always, a wonderful list of so many options for gifts! I also love that it came out on my birthday. Guess Iโll have to share this with my husband.
Thanks Sally!
What a fantastic list! As a follower from Canada I am grateful that many of these things can be found on amazon.ca. I am also beyond excited to see you recommending this sprinkle company โ Sweetapolita! They are a Canadian company and their sprinkles are phenomenal. I have a professional baker friend in my life and these are the sprinkles she almost exclusively uses. I also can attest to the fact that I have eaten numerous baked items [more than I am willing to confess to!] From several bakeries [that I donโt know the owners of] who also exclusively use the sprinkles and I can personally attest to the fact that not only are they gorgeous but they also taste good. That can be a hard combination to find! Wishing you a happy Thanksgiving!
Thank you so much for your generosity… as always you are always a blessing to us home bakers… thank you for the ideas and continue to inspire us! God bless u always
I may or may not have forwarded this post to my husband so quickly I ripped a hole in the space-time continuum.
According to his family, I’m really hard to shop for. I don’t think I am, but now he has a list to give them! He just has to, you know, remove the things that I already have ๐
I am so glad you posted this! I just made a mental note yesterday to do a search on your site for baker must haves for my stocking ;). Particularly, I have been trying to function without owning cookie scoops for years and this Christmas that needs to change lol. I feel like most of your recipes that I frequent use the 1.5 size so I’m going to start there! Happy holidays! P.S. I am never going to enjoy pumpkin anything without homemade salted caramel drizzle again now lol. P.P.S. I have your Great Pumpkin Pie, No Bake Pumpkin Cheesecake and Best Pumpkin Cake Ever all prepared for tomorrow… and that’s only for a family of 5 (2 adults and 3 littles). Thinking of skipping the meal altogether and just having dessert haha. Thank you so much for helping me make holidays festive, fun and delicious for my loved ones! My family totally thinks I am a baking legend because of SBA. Thankful for you! I am such a fan girl, happy Thanksgiving Sally! ๐
Just another reason I follow you… not only do you provide useful tools and gifts, but you include the links and you even promote other chefs cookbooks! You’re so humble! Thanks for always providing great recipes and excellent content! Happy Thanksgiving!

What recipes would be best for the fingerprint cookie stamps from Williams Sonoma? Would the lemon thumbprint recipe be too soft to roll out??
Hi Melissa, the best cookies for that would be roll-out/cut-out cookies like these sugar cookies. The lemon thumbprint cookies recipe is too soft, yes.
Wow this is great!!

Hi, We do not have any experience baking with sourdough starter, so weโre unsure what canister you should use!

Seriously — can’t resist reading your upbeat attitudes & best instructions ever!!

Hi Jessica, use code SALLY20. Bella Bean Studios (the business I am using to print and sell the shirts) accepts that code until Nov. 30.
Thanks so much for your help!
I love these ideas. Whenever my family asks for a wish list, all I do is send them this link.

My cousin’s daughter, who will be 13 next year, loves baking. what would you suggest as a gift?
Hi Darlene, how about one of the baking sets under “Curated List of Thoughtful Baking Sets”? Any of those would be a great gift for a baker looking to build up their baking pans and tools. Otherwise, an apron is always a fantastic option!
I love that so many of these are from Etsy!! A great list. Thank you!
Hello Sally,
Could you recommend a highly rated bench scraper? I didn’t see that in your list.
Thank you!!
