March 2019 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Lemon Bars

We’re making classic lemon bars– a seemingly easy recipe where many things could go wrong. I’ll teach you how to avoid bars that are under-baked, over-baked, too sweet, too tangy, etc. And if you don’t like lemon, I have another citrus variation. 🙂

Everyone who participates in the March Sally’s Baking Challenge is automatically entered. See below for How to Join Sally’s Baking Challenge. My assistants and I keep track of your photos and randomly select 1 winner at the end of the month. This giveaway is open to the whole world. Visit the Sally’s Baking Challenge FAQ page if you have any questions about my baking challenges!

Let’s Review the February Baking Challenge

February 2019 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Homemade Chocolate Truffles

The amount of participation in the February 2019 Sally’s Baking Challenge illustrates the power of chocolate. This dearly loved flavor was enjoyed by hundreds as you prepared your own homemade truffles. We saw most of the participation Valentine’s Day week, but over 100 of you made them on the first day! Thank you so much for joining me in February and leaving your reviews on the recipe.

By the way, there were some creative chocolate truffle toppings we saw this month include crushed white cheddar cheez-its, freeze-dried strawberries, potato chips!

One of my favorite recipe reviews came from reader Meredith:

“I have always wanted to make truffles, but I didn’t think I could do it. I watched Sally’s tutorial then read the recipe, and thought to myself…. I’m going to try today! The truffles turned out perfect! Thank you Sally! Way easier than I thought to make them.”

We gathered as many chocolate truffles photo entries as we could and included them below. (Email is the best way to guarantee your photo will be included!)

Giveaway winner for February is Kelly and she has been notified. 🙂

  1. YES! I’ve always wanted to try lemon bars. Love the spring-like flavor, as I am so ready for the warmer season. 😀

  2. Yay !! I just bought a 5 lb. bag of lemons not knowing what I was going to bake, but follow my intuition for something Lemony and Springtime…….and there you are with this beautiful pic of Lemon Bars !!
Oh Sally, like the little Crocus that pops up out of the long winter snow… ARE a breath of Spring and Sunshine!! I just adore your recipes. Looking forward to this for sure.

  3. Mm…my husband LOVES lemon bars. We were just talking about them the other day because it’s been a while since I made them. He said they are his favorite dessert after brownies! I’m pretty sure I tried your recipe a few years ago when I first got your cookbook! Looks like I’ll be making them again!

  4. I LOVE lemon bars. It’s always the dessert my friends ask for when we get together.
I think my recipe is the best, so I’m excited to see how it compares to Sally’s.

  5. I LOVE lemon bars. My Mom loves them too so I make them for her esp during holidays. I can’t wait to try your recipe!!

  6. I cannot wait for spring… this has been such a drab, cold and snowy winter. Lemon SCREAMS spring to me (sorry to shout). Aaaannd, lemon is truly my dessert weakness. Chocolate I can take or leave, but lemon? YUMSKI. Can’t wait for your recipe, Sally! 🙂

  7. YES! I’ve been hoping you would post a recipe for lemon bars! Lemon is one of my favorite flavors, and I can’t wait to try this recipe! Definitely gonna make this one soon! Looove how thick the lemon filling layer is 😉 The more lemon the better!

  8. My dad used to love all things lemon. We could always count on him sharing his stash of lemon drops, and he always requested lemon meringue pie for his birthday. I’ll have to make these in his honor! Wish he was still here to enjoy them with us!

  9. These lemon bars are delicious! The shortbread crust goes so well with the sweet and tart lemon filling. We enjoyed them warm after an hour of cooling!

  10. I enjoyed making these today. It didn’t take a lot of time and I had all the indgredients at home. I made half the recipe in a 9×9 pan.
I probably overbake mine because the lemon filling was a little dense, or maybe it’s supposed to be like that, ( not sure).

  11. Made the Lemon Bars this past weekend and they were ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!!!!!! Will be making these over and over again. Next time I’ll be sure and post a picture,(they didn’t last long..LOL

  12. I loved the simplicity of the recipe! A shortbread crust is my favorite and the curd was a perfect combination of creamy and tart.

  13. Made a full pan of lemon, and then half batches of lime and mandarin orange. The family enjoyed them all, but the kids were all in love with the lime. 🙂

  14. Finally did a baking challenge this month! I made pink grapefruit bars to serve at my daughter’s first birthday! They went over well even though I forgot to add the powdered sugar top 🙂

  15. My husband and children love Lemon Bars and I am always looking for new recipes! I tried your recipe and they are going to be my new favorite for the family! My son in law is even a fan! The shortbread crust is to die for!!

  16. Loved this recipe! It tasted like a bite of spring, much needed after this brutal winter. It was also easy enough to follow that I had 4 “helpers” under age 8 and it still turned out perfect.

  17. Loved this recipe so much! It is perfect to celebrate the start of spring. I made the lemon bars gluten-free as I don’t tolerate gluten and they turned out delicious. I served them to my (non-gluten-free) friends on my birthday party and everybody loved them!

  18. Had such fun baking this recipe! Made it with a couple of different types of citrus and received rave reviews each time. Thanks for another great recipe! 🙂
