A couple weeks ago, I attended the Tasty Food Photography workshop taught by Lindsay from Pinch of Yum. Lindsay is a full-time blogger who quit her job as an elementary school teacher to build Pinch of Yum into a thriving online space. Her love for teaching is echoed in the way she writes her food blog and how she graciously offers her blogging and photography knowledge to her readers. Her story is completely inspiring and when I heard she was teaching photography workshops in her new studio, I jumped at the opportunity to be apart of the fun.

Photography is where I’ve always struggled. I taught myself how to use a DSLR camera 4 years ago with the help from a few books, lots of practice, and advice from friends who had experience. It certainly doesn’t come easy, but that’s why I love it. There is always something new to learn.

Lindsay taught us about finding our unique style and translating that into our brand. This certainly isn’t a workshop just for food bloggers. Really, for any photographer looking for inspiration and to find his/her own style!

We learned about building and strengthening a brand message, telling a story with our photos, building a scene, intentional styling, overall composition, and adding texture to our shots. I definitely need to invest in a few more interesting props!

There was plenty of practice time for us to have a little hands-on experience. I really valued this time because we could style our own shots using all of Lindsay’s props, photography backdrops, and beautiful food that Lindsay and her team had for us. That we also enjoyed for our meals!

I focused on practicing where I struggle most. Overhead shots, negative space, using my macro lens to really get all the detail, and backlighting. I loooove how backlit shots look, but have trouble with the lighting in my house. Lindsay taught us how to work with the light we have. Feeling more confident now!

We also spent time learning different techniques and tricks in post processing. I mainly use Lightroom to edit my photos. Lindsay taught us a ton editing, storing, and uploading tricks I didn’t even know were possible. A billion lightbulbs were going off in my head followed by even more “aha” moments.

I feel inspired, rejuvenated, focused, energized, and more confident behind the camera. Also indefinitely grateful that I got to meet and be inspired by so many talented photographers. I love learning more about what I do every day; that’s one of the best parts of this job. There is ALWAYS more to learn, whether that is learning in the kitchen, behind the camera, editing the photography, and writing engaging content. That’s why I love spending time with fellow bloggers, bakers, cooks, writers, and photographers in real life. They’re like coworkers; we can bounce new ideas off of each other, learn, inspire, teach, and connect.

  2. Beautiful photos, Sally! I love that you were able to learn from Lindsay– her style is SO different from yours. Of course, I love both of your styles, and it’s neat to see some of her inspiration in your signature Sally style! My fav photo? The carrots. Perhaps it’s because I’m partial to anything orange, or maybe it’s because they’re just so RAW and earthy… But I love it!! And I would totally hang it in my kitchen. Glad you’re feeling rejuvenated! Can’t wait to see some of the things you learned in upcoming photos!

  5. I’m a self-taught foodographer too — and struggled for years to take photographs that I was mildly pleased with.  I would have loved to attend this workshop — it looks amazing — and your pictures are over-the-moon!

  6. Hi Sally – FANTASTIC work! Wow….I love so many of these photos! I can definitely see a difference but there again, I think you were fantastic to begin with. I, like Carlos above, am still getting familiar with my Canon EOS DSLR and reading a few books but time is always a factor with a FT job and home, gardens, etc., to take care of! Lots to juggle but I totally agree with your that it’s ALL about the practice! Last month at the Phila Flower Show I think was the BEST thing for me….to just ‘get out there and shoot’….playing with aperature, ISO, shutter speeds, etc….it truly was. I have a question about Lindsay’s classes..not sure if you’ll know the answer. I’m taking Bjork’s online Blogging course…do you think Lindsay will ever offer these workshops ‘online’…kind of like attending live courses online for college? Travelling to MN as of right now wouldn’t be an option for me, but something to consider for sure! Are these workshops good for ‘true beginners’ or more advanced photographers? Again, your pics are fantastic! Great stuff!

    1. Hey Sharon! I know she offers two types of photography workshop courses. One for beginners which is all over DSLR training. Another focused on just branding and style, for those who have had practice with DSLRs. I’m unsure about online courses, but it doesn’t hurt to ask the Pinch of Yum team! 🙂

  7. Gorgeous, Sally! Learning about light can be such a struggle, can’t it? The one phrase that you used that hit home with me is “how to work with the light we have.” Instead of wishing that I had perfect lighting in my home, I need to figure out how to use what I have most effectively. There is always more to learn, right? Great post.

    1. ALWAYS more to learn, that’s exactly right. I tried some new techniques to work with the light I have including opening a door to bring in more light. Sounds like such a silly thing but the amount of added light makes a difference!

  9. Sally, I stumbled upon your blog when I was looking for a raisin oatmeal cookies recipe. By the way, they were really good. So I gave them away because I would have eaten all of them.
    Thank you for bring the photography information to all of us.  It is so helpful.  My blog isn’t a food blog except when it is.  All of the hints will help tremendously.

    Oh those meals look delicious! I get your problem with backlit photos, I like that ethereal quality they give a shoot, but are so hard to nail.

    I never would have thought a workshop could teach you new things after so many years of running your blog, good to hear that it was a great day full of useful information! Will you be sharing some of your newfound, newly experienced tips and tricks in a Photography post? I’d also love to read more about those lightbulb post-processing moments! 😉

    1. Hi Stella! A lot of what I learned is just to challenge yourself with new angles and different lighting. Focus on what your brand message truly is and plan out your photos to line up with that message. It was a workshop revolved around style and brand, but she also offers one on all-around DSLR training and practice!

  11. My cousin takes great pics also. He will choose 12 he likes best then has them made into calender’s. They make great Christmas gifts of his travels.

    Wow. This is really stunning. I must say, I ran into your website through a SORTEDfoods article and I was expecting to find recipes to add to my collection (Which I have– all of which look absolutely amazing, and I’m dying to try them!). I was not expecting to find such beautiful photography. The colors and the textures of the photographs are incredible, and I’m really impressed with the compositions and the way the viewer can easily connect with the art. And don’t get me started on the shadows and highlights. Thank you for sharing your snapshots of the world, and the way you have made it your own! As an aspiring artist, I’m quite sure you’re eager to improve as well, (There’s always room for an artist to improve!) and I’m excited to see all your other work! Imagine that– you’re all ready this spectacular, you’ll probably reach as close to perfection as it gets someday– not that this isn’t reaching anyone’s standards. This is phenomenal.
