Let’s Review the July Baking Challenge
July 2021 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Homemade Berry Turnovers
This was a fun, yet challenging recipe for the summertime. It reminded me of two previous Sally’s Baking Challenge recipes: breakfast pastries from August 2020 and croissants from April 2018. Did you participate in those months too? However, unlike both, this dough doesn’t require any yeast. The layers and crisp flakiness come from the mixing and folding. Lots of particular precision with this one, but you all did such a wonderful job. You were creative with fillings!! Mixed berry, just strawberry, cherry, peach, jam, blackberry, apple cinnamon, and more. Some topped with icing, others with sprinkles and/or confectioners’ sugar. They’re all looking delicious!
Thank you so much for participating! We gathered as many homemade berry turnovers emailed photo entries as we could and included them below.
July Baking Challenge Winner
Challenge winner for July is Tara who has already been notified.
Hey Sally! Great recipe for this month’s challenge! I wanted to have a go before the challenge and it turned out AMAZING! (I always leave comments on your posts, so you can probably find my comment that I recently put on for the Ice cream loaf cake; I used the same email and name I used here!) Lovely job. I love ice cream cakes, sprinkles AND ganache, so what could be better! A total show-stopper with my family. My dog also got a sniff and looked like he liked it too! I obviously didn’t give him some because of the chocolate… but lovely recipe! Lots of thanks to you and your team!
Wow Tara, your turnovers look amazing . Congratulations!
Congratulations Tara! They look absolutely delicious 🙂
Congrats to Tara!
Nice job Tara!!
Congrats Tara and all the bakers on this challenging recipe! This one was NOT for the faint of heart… I skipped it myself! So many delicious looking turnovers here and I hope everyone enjoyed learning or practicing these pastry skills.
Congratulations Tara!! They look delicious.
Do you think you could post a pic of the winning plate from now on? Would be interested to see that! Thanks!
Hi Debbie! You can see the winner’s recipe photo at the bottom of the post.
I am curious to know what criteria you used to select the winner? So many beautiful shots and this one was chosen, why? Was it a draw from a hat or did someone have something in mind when they were selecting the photos to win? Such as lighting, color, angle, life-like quality? Just curious to know before I enter any more contests.
Hi Marty, the baking challenge winner is selected using a spreadsheet and a random number generator. Those who leave a review on the recipe in addition to sending the photo are entered twice. It’s not based on how a photo looks.
Good to know Sally. As you know, a lot of work goes into making puffed pastry and this recipe was challenging. I know now to read the rules to make sure I understand them. I would think that using canned dough and a can of berry pie filling wouldn’t have qualified, but I see now that the contest was just random. Congratulations Tara….. your number came up.
