How to Join Sally's Baking Challenge

  1. Recipe: On or around the 1st of each month, I publish a new challenge recipe. Sign up for Sally’s Baking Challenge emails so you’re alerted as soon as a new challenge recipe is published!
  2. Bake & Comment: Bake the recipe during that month.
  3. Send: Share your recipe photo with us via email: [email protected]. By emailing your recipe photo, you are automatically entered in the giveaway. For a bonus entry, leave a review on the challenge recipe. Instagram direct messages are hard to track, so please email your recipe photo instead. Feel free to share on social media using #sallysbakingchallenge and tagging me (@sallysbakeblog), but the only way to guarantee you are in the running is sending your entry via email.

May 2019 Sally’s Baking Challenge Recipe: Scones

May’s baking challenge was dedicated to homemade scones. And when I say dedication, I’m talking about over 1,000 of you! Each new month brings more and more participants. It’s truly wonderful to see thousands of bakers unite with 1 recipe. Several of you had never made scones before and I was thrilled to watch you try something new. You had the option of choosing your own flavor and your creativity certainly shined. Some of my favorites were jalapeño cheddar scones, maple cranberry pecan scones, and mint chocolate chunk scones.

Thank you for making these challenges so fun and successful. They would be nothing without you!

One of my favorite recipe reviews came from reader Alyssa:

“My husband and I made the chocolate chip scone recipe this weekend, and they turned out SO WELL! We followed the recipe to a tee and had so much fun baking these. Can’t wait to try out some of the other varieties!”

    In all my 35+ years of baking I’ve only made one angel food cake from scratch and that was about 5-6 years ago. My son declared he would never eat another box mix again after knowing a homemade one was so delicious and and a 100 times better! Looking forward to trying your recipe.

  11. I am so excited for this challenge!!! Is there a certain type of pan we need to make this? I want to make sure I am ready for tomorrow

    1. Hi Angel! A tube pan is ideal for angel food cake. If you don’t have one, this one is my favorite and it’s relatively inexpensive.

  12. Having made angel food cake a number of times from scratch and using a number of recipes , there are a lot of pitfalls. I look forward to you addressing the challenges and seeing your recipe. I most often make a boxed mix—but not from the cake brands commonly on the shelf. I occasionally find a small store brand that still offers the 2 part method of “A” package of egg whites beaten first and then the “B” package of flour and sugar which is gently folded in. It make the closest thing to scratch flavor and consistent results.

  15. I was late and just pulled my Scones out of the oven!!!
    They came out delicious!!! I added some lemon and tiny bits of dried apricots and candied ginger pieces. Mmmmmm. Thanks Sally!!!

  19. It’s one of the cakes I have purchased from our local grocer H-E-B it is always good but I now have an opportunity to make my own! This is so great a cake I reserve for Summer picnics and any time near a body of water, it’s the best to cool down with summer fruit! Thank you and I can’t wait!!!

    I have baked from scratch all my life (I am 58) but have not been successful making Angel Food Cake. When you posted June‘s challenge, I decided to give it a try (again!). I am happy I did because my Angel Food Cake Muffins turned out great thanks to all of your tips! I even made half the recipe and it worked. (To insure accuracy, I weighed the flour and sugar). The muffins are delicious! So much better then store bought or a mix!! Thank you!!
