After a food-filled and fun-filled weekend, it feels good to be back in Baltimore and back to work! You’re going to see a lot of me this month. I hope you’re ready for some sweets.
But first? Pizza!
The month of December will be full of friends, laughter, guests, family, and food! What better way to bring everyone together than with homemade pizza? And umm… these candy cane cookies.
When Kevin and I make pizza at home, he likes to pile on the mozzarella cheese and pepperoni. I, on the other hand, like to pile on the unique toppings and cheeses. Like creamy gorgonzola cheese paired with juicy apples, rosemary, and a touch of honey. No tomato sauce, just sweet salty goodness.
It’s not weird, I promise.
My best friend Marie got me hooked on the combination of salty pizza and sweet honey. A restaurant she visits in Cleveland serves a honey jar with their pizza! Have you ever tried pizza drizzled with a touch of honey? Get ready to be amazed. It is like nothing you’ve ever tasted before. Unless, of course, you’ve tasted it before…
The honey goes onto today’s pizza recipe right before serving. So if you think it’s strange, don’t worry! The honey is optional. The other fun toppings? Totally necessary. Let’s see how I made today’s pizza…
The tastiest pizza I’ve had in my entire life. Not exaggerating.
The other week I shared my favorite homemade pizza crust with you. I piled it heavily with cheese, just how Kevin likes it. I have been getting rave reviews about this crust! It’s soft in the center, yet crusty on the edges. Chewy and bready, without tasting “yeasty.” And it’s simple!
On a separate page, I provide plenty of in-process photos so you can see exactly how to make the pizza crust at home. I am a visual learner myself, so I’m glad the photo tutorial has been helpful to you as well!
I have done everything from roasted veggies, bbq chicken, pesto, and Hawaiian pizza the past few weeks and can’t wait to continue to share more and more pizza recipes with you using my favorite crust. It’s the perfect blank canvas for an array of your favorites!
You’re going to need: the homemade crust (recipe below), olive oil, a bit of shredded mozzarella, 8 ounces of gorgonzola (or more if you’re a cheese lover!), 1 small thinly sliced apple, and a sprinkle of rosemary. Pile it high onto the dough and bake.
Make sure your oven is hot. Hot hot hot! The hotter, the better.
I usually allow my oven to preheat for 30 full minutes as the dough is doing its final rising. Every inch of your oven needs to be very, very hot – so be sure to preheat for the full time.
The pizza will take 15 minutes, tops. For the last minute, I move the oven rack to the top rack to really brown the edges. That’s optional.
Once baked… slice and serve that pizza!
The dough is crusty, yet soft. The mozzarella provides a cheesy base. There’s creamy, salty gorgonzola in every bite. The sweet apples, caramelize ever so gently in the oven. The savory, aromatic rosemary compliments the cheeses and sweet apples. And finally! A light drizzle of honey finishes each bite off.
It’s a cornucopia of tastes, textures, and flavors. But it all works so wonderfully together! It was so good, I had three slices in a matter of minutes of lunch immediately after shooting this! Then more for dinner.
And guess what? There are so many goodies you can add or substitute! Try piling on a few caramelized onions, bacon crumbles, or prosciutto. Use goat cheese or blue cheese instead of gorgonzola. Add some arugula, basil, or substitute a sliced pear for the apple.

Caramelized Apple Gorgonzola Pizza
Homemade pizza crust piled high with creamy gorgonzola, rosemary, caramelized apples, and a touch of sweet honey. Makes one 12-inch pizza or you can make two pizzas from my entire crust recipe and double the toppings listed below.
Prep Time: 2 hours 15 minutes
Total Time: 2 hours 30 minutes
Prepare the pizza dough through step 11, including preheating the oven to 475F as described in step 8.
Top the crust with the mozzarella cheese, gorgonzola cheese, apple slices, and then sprinkle with rosemary.
Bake for 12-15 minutes. For the last minute, I move the oven rack to the top rack to really brown the edges. That's optional.
Slice hot pizza and serve immediately. Drizzle each slice with honey, if desired. Store leftover pizza covered tightly in the refrigerator and reheat as you prefer. Baked pizza slices may be frozen up to 1 month.
