Addictive Recipes from a Self-Taught Baker

Saturday Seven

Was anyone else all sorts of backwards this week? Like, what day is it? I forgot today is Saturday until like 8pm last night. And on Wednesday, I was convinced it was Monday. But no complaints here because it’s the weekend!

Do you have any fun plans this weekend? I’m visiting my parents. Remember all the scones I made in my Facebook LIVE video on Wednesday? I froze them so I could bring them along this weekend. Tonight mama’s making my favorite salmon. Also on the agenda: plenty of resting and relaxing. Regardless of the short week, I spent most of my waking hours working. I’m a month ahead on tested and photographed recipes. Getting content prepped before someone special enters our lives. ♥ 30 weeks along now!

Let’s see, what else is new…

1) You see that chocolate concoction above? That’s a new recipe coming this Monday. You won’t believe what it is. I’m making it again next weekend for my friend’s birthday. I’m not even a huge chocolate fa-reak, but couldn’t stop “taste testing” this one. I’m excited to post it!

2) Do you make homemade dog food or dog treats for your pup(s)? I really don’t– I’m super strict about giving them human food but totally understand those of you who make homemade dog food. Occasionally, I’ll make soft peanut butter carrot dog treats and peanut butter bacon dog treats, but I kinda want to make these frozen pupcakes just because. 🙂 Also: we got them a kiddie pool. Yes, we are those people.

3) Is anyone else wondering how the heck it’s already July? Depending who you ask, realizing that the year is more than halfway over can be a little depressing. But it’s a helpful reminder to get our goals back in check. In fact, I’m calling it motivating. I’ve been revisiting a couple of my super simple resolutions like date nights, 1 new-to-us dinner recipe a week, and work/life balance– and realize a couple of them have been put on the back burner. Life gets in the way, but I’m excited to really work towards those date nights again. Where I put down my phone and all other technology and we get out and do something FUN. Especially before September arrives. Maybe a good reminder for you to!

4) Blackberry cobbler crumble, anyone? Or how about these peanut butter cookie ice cream sandwiches. And you may not think slow cookers belong on your counter in the summertime, but here are 31 reasons to change your mind.

5) I’ve gotten many questions about how I shape cookie dough before it goes into the oven. Well HERE IT IS! At :40, I shape the cookie dough into balls and create all those little lumps and bumps at the top. This creates a textured top on the baked cookie. I swear by this!

6) Zucchini and Herbed Ricotta Flatbread. I made this last summer and just remembered it. On my menu this week. And that’s my favorite flatbread dough, too. Easy!

7) Winner for last week’s cherry pie gizmo and gadget giveaway was announced and emailed. Thank you so much for entering! I love seeing all your cherry pie recipes so far for the July Baking Challenge this month. Keep emailing them to me and posting on my Facebook– also using #sallysbakingchallenge on Instagram.

Make a delicious one!

  1. That chocolate cake looks so yummy!! Can’t wait to see what you’ve come up with now. Thank you for all the fruit desserts you posted this week. Everything at the farmers market and grocery store looks so good and I want to make all of them! Thank you for all of your hard work and the delicious recipes. Enjoy your weekend with your dad and mom☺

  2. I will be sure to check in on Monday. I am one of those chocoholics, so this sneak peek gets me excited.
I made a vegan mango chocolate cake for the first time, if you would like, you can check it out here: http://jennyisbaking.com/2017/07/02/vegan-mango-chocolate-cake/
Thanks for reminding me to take some time off to be with my husband. We also have the tradition of date night and it is really cool to be offline and just be with your loved one(s).

    • It’s crazy that I have to force myself to “disconnect” these days. And when I do, I love it! Totally agree 🙂

  3. We bought our dog a pool a few years ago and she wanted nothing to do with it, uh.  But I know she’d be all about those treats!  And yum, can’t wait for that chocolate recipe.  Enjoy the weekend at your parents.

  4. I have made doggie biscuits and Rachael Ray’s mini muttball soup for my dogs. The biscuits were too time consuming and I wouldn’t do it again.

  5. I love chocolate and can’t wait for Monday!  My dog eats almost all homemade food-she had a lot of allergies as a puppy so I started giving her beef and broccoli or carrots.  I’m pretty sure she eats better than all of us!  She does love her desserts though.  I think I’ll try those PB carrot treats!  Enjoy your weekend.

  6. Made your peanut butter brownies yesterday for my husband, who loves peanut butter.  I’m a chocolate person, so thanks for tempting me with the chocolate on Monday.  Loved the salmon recipe, and the sauce recipe, especially to boil it down and serve over salmon.  Living in So Cal, we will grill the salmon. Can’t wait to try this weekend.  Have a nice weekend with your Mom, soon to be Grandma!

  7. I don’t give my cats homemade treats – I’m too afraid of accidentally poisoning them. I do, however, give one of my cats peanut butter off a spoon. He always follows me around the house begging for it when he wants it. It’s amazing how crazy he goes for the stuff (um, we have something in common)! I haven’t gotten to do much baking yet this summer, but I recently bought a new cookbook and can’t wait to make a few things from it. I’ve also been eyeing a few of your fruit-filled desserts lately (and craving them too). Have a relaxing weekend, Sally & stay cool 🙂

  8. I can’t wait to see this chocolate recipe!! Ok so I also have a kiddie pool for my dog hehehe. And sometimes I make dog treats for my dogs. Only because my yorkie has a lot of food allergies, so it’s easier for me to make treats than spend an hour at the pet store.
I was ALL screwed up on my days this week too! But I am soooo glad it is the weekend now. Have a great weekend Sally! 🙂

  9. I cannot wait for this new recipe to come out! I’m sure it will be delicious. As a grad gift, I was given a KitchenAid stand mixer – ice blue – and it is fantastic! I love it, and I’m using it as much as I can. Also, loved the cookie video! Great idea, and one I will surely be trying out sometime! 🙂

  10. Sally – I LOVE your facebook live videos! You’ve inspired me  to attempt scones! I’ve never tried before as I was too nervous lol.   Your kitchen is amazing but my favorite part was seeing the dog.  #imacrazydogperson
Thank you for the wonderful recipes and sharing with all us !!!!

    • I appreciate this SO MUCH! The dogs (Jude especially) loves to make appearances in them haha! Thanks Jennifer 🙂

  11. Happy Saturday Sally!  Thanks for sharing all these wonderful recipes.  I just made a batch of the Strawberry chocolate chip muffins for my grandkids.  I have a feeling they’re going to gobble them up with a flourish.  Congratulations on your pregnancy and have a wonderful time at your parents tonight.

    • Thank you so much Evelyn! I hope they enjoy those muffins. I really like to combo of berries in chocolate in them.

  12. Happy Saturday! We are staying with friends until the visas get here…and they have 2 dogs. I think I will make the peanut butter bacon dogs treats as part of a thank you gift to them. Thanks for the ideas!

  13. Sally….all looks so nummy as usual:)

Question – if you ever stumble on dog treats without peanut butter please let me know.
I have this fussy German Shephard grand dog that does not like peanut butter. Loves ice cream
but oh my if there is even a spec of peanut butter in it he will spit it out:)

    • I feel like I’ve never met a dog who doesn’t love peanut butter! I know dogs can be allergic but usually they love it! I’ll let you know if I stumble upon any I find 🙂

  14. Excited to see what Monday’s post will be. I love anything chocolate!!!

  15. I am one of those people, too! My lab loves his kiddie pool and “digs” until he empties half the pool. So funny to watch!
I am thankful for the reminder of date nights. It’s important to remember that we were a couple before we were parents.
My days are still mixed up! I just realized today is Monday which means I have a new chocolate recipe that needs to be looked at! Thank you for sharing!

  16. My office provides lunch on Tuesdays, and I was SO. CONFUSED. on Thursday when the office kitchen wasn’t laden with delicious food!

Is…is it not normal to have a kiddie pool to help your pups cool off? I’ll have to try a couple of those dog treat recipes!

I’m…still a newlywed, I think (I’m the weirdo who emailed you on my honeymoon about your overnight French toast bake), and I don’t think my Boything and I have had a date since the wedding. I got drafted to assistant stage manage a show, and it’s taken over my life. I can’t wait until August for a breather!
