Happy weekending to all of you. What’s new with you? What are you baking this weekend? We’re settling into new life as parents and I’ve been enjoying all the time off from the kitchen/baking/recipe testing/camera to spend with my baby girl Noelle. She’s a dream come true. I can’t get enough snuggles!!

Let’s chat about some stuff!

1) Newsflash! Soft and fluffy funfetti cupcakes taste approximately 98% better when topped with pink tinted frosting. And filled with pink sprinkles.

2) How are your pumpkin rolls for October’s Baking Challenge coming along? The general feedback so far has been “so much easier than I thought” and that’s what my goal is with these monthly baking challenges. To give you something NEW but also teach you that these new “scary” baking techniques/recipes aren’t complicated at all. You just have to muster up the courage to try. Anyway, thank you for uploading and sharing all of your recipe pictures with me. I love all of your pumpkin roll creations!!

3) Did you catch my new video for black and white cookies? These classic NYC cookies are surprisingly simple. PS: this recipe comes straight from America’s Test Kitchen new cookbook The Perfect Cookie. A few of you have reported back with over-spreading issues and I added a note to the black and white cookies recipe to add a little more flour to help combat the issue.

4) Many of you asked me about a baby book for Noelle. My friends recommended this baby book to us and it’s SO DARN CUTE. The picture I took of her footprints is a page out of this adorable baby book.

5) If you like savory pumpkin, this pumpkin chili looks incredible. Def want to try it sometime. And how much fun are these Halloween Oreo pops? And I’d love to try this fig rosé jam one day!

7) Get ready for pie week #2 this year. Remember pie week from last year? If not, I dubbed the first week of November 2016 “pie week”– I shared new pie recipes the entire week. I already tested, photographed, and wrote the recipes for this year. It begins Monday, October 30th. Get your pie dishes ready!

  2. I have the same baby book for my daughter and love it! So cute! So far I have made the monster cookies and spiced pumpkin whoopie pies – both were delish! Having a hard time deciding what to make next cause I want to make them allllll. 

    • I love those pumpkin whoopie pies, especially this time of year. Try the autumn spice oatmeal cookies next. I LOVE them!

  3. Actually, I decided to make a pumpkin layer cake instead of a pumpkin roll. I am currently working on the pear cream I want to fill it with and was thinking of caramelizing walnuts as the topping. So busy weekend baking 🙂

I’m feeling a bit bereft because I’ve still got baking left from last weekend (and beyond) – BOTH my food hounds are now at University, and the remaining girl child doesn’t eat nearly as much as they did!  I’m going to have to learn to downsize my baking – although I’m sure work won’t mind if I dump extra stuff in the office instead…

I’ve been challenged by my fiance to work through your new cookbook as like a “Julie and Julia” kind of project, so challenge accepted! 😉 So far I’ve made: chewy chocolate chip cookies, crispy-edged chocolate chip cookies, white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, favorite oatmeal raisin cookies, and cake batter chocolate chip cookies. YUM!

    • Haha!! I love that. You’ll have to always let me know when you try a new cookie recipe. The oatmeal raisin cookies is my favorite recipe in the whole book!

  8. I am going to make this fall and winter’s project to make as many of the cookie recipes as possible from Cookie Addiction. So far I’ve made three: autumn spice, apple cinnamon and lemon creme. The lemon cookies are some of the best cookies I’ve made in a long time. My dad loved all the textures of the autumn spice. I bought a pound of sprinkles at the local cake supply store for the sprinkles chapter.

    • Sound you’re DEFINITELY prepared for that sprinkle chapter 😉
      I really love the autumn spice oatmeal cookies because of all the texture and different flavors. And the lemon creme sandwiches are always a hit with my family! You chose a few wonderful cookie recipes to try first.

  9. I made soft funfetti chocolate chip cookies yesterday. The hubby stole 4, then the boys discovered them. Delicious! I’m trying to decide which sprinkle recipe to make next.

    I’m very excited for pie week (I made 2 apple cranberry pies last year & they were loved by all)!! I need more pie in my life.  I recently made your salted caramel apple galette & it was SO delicious!! Everyone that had some loved it!  
    From your new book I just made the peanut butter & jelly thumbprints (with strawberry jam) & they are AMAZING! I cannot resist them!! Good thing I froze half of the cookie dough balls.
    We will be traveling in a couple of days & gone for the rest of October so I won’t get to make this months challenge cake but maybe I can make it next month.

I let my 15 year old son pick out which cookie to make first-he chose the peanut butter cup filled chocolate one!  No surprise there.  They were so good!  The only negative was that the recipe only made 16 and in a house full of boys they were gone FAST!!  Next up the chocolate sugar cookies.  Enjoy this special time with your baby because it goes so fast.  Just like the cookies!!  

  13. I made the monster cookies which are AMAZING! I’m also making some of your freezer recipes this weekend so when my husband is back to work and our son starts daycare we have some super easy meals. That was my plan before our son was born but he came 2 Months early! So now we will have a stocked freezer for the next transition 🙂 I’m also making a Twix cheesecake for bosses day Monday! Those pictures of baby Noelle are so adorable, she’s just beautiful!

  17. Dear Sally, so glad to hear that you are all doing well and that you enjoy being away from the kitchen. 😉 Lucky for us you planned pie week 2 already – I’m so impressed! Yay for pies, looking forward to it!
    I think later this evening I’ll make some version of your overnight swet rolls for a late sunday breakfast tomorrow, maybe the apple version! 🙂
    And, honestly, I find that the questions on someone’s baby’s sleep can put quite a bit of pressure on the mother. Almost no baby sleeps “through the night” in their first weeks. They get hungry often because their stomach is really small, so they have to wake up. It’s no good or bad habit and they can’t be trained to sleep through, they sleep longer periods of time as they grow and ajust do the rhythm of day and night. As long as you and the baby are comfortable everything is fine – you two know best 🙂

  18. Finally got my new stove and broke it in with oatmeal chocolate chip cookies from your book! I just made your whole wheat apple muffins too. It seems like yesterday I was cuddling my itty bitty baby – and now she’s crawling, standing and into everything!

  19. Hi Sally, congratulations on your baby girl! I am glad to hear that both of you are well! I just made a batch of the Brown Butter Toffee Chocolate Chip Cookies from your new cookie book and are in my frig. I plan on baking them tomorrow. While I was mixing up the batter, it smelled sooo DEVINE from the brown butter! Cannot wait to eat these. I love your new cookie book. I also ordered your baking addiction book too and love it as well. Congratulations again to you and Kevin on your baby girl.

  20. Like Rachel above, I am baking my way through the Cookie Addiction book! I have two questions, but obvs no hurry or need to answer (also not sure this is the best place for questions). And, my apologies if these have been answered elsewhere. What is your stance on doubling your cookie recipes? These batches do not last long around here, and I’m wondering which, if any, can be doubled. And: we love the sugar cookies, but find the proportion of dry to wet ingredients makes them a bit crumbly (I did roll out prior to chilling, and chilled as directed)–this could well be my error, but if it’s a weather-based issue, is it OK to increase the egg or add some other liquid?? Love your recipes, Sally!!

    • Hi Laurie! Thanks for asking. I typically recommend making two separate batches of cookies instead of doubling– especially if the single recipe is a large-batch recipe yielding 2 dozen or more cookies. When doubling, the ratios could be a little off and you risk under or over-mixing when working with more cookie dough.

  22. My husband’s goal is to cook through an entire cookbook before he turns 30 and he chose this one! He made Nutella no bakes for game night tonight and maple glazed cookies for my mom’s birthday tomorrow. Delicious flavors! We have to get cracking on the Christmas ones especially because we only have two Christmas seasons before the big 3-0!

  23. So far all I’ve made from the new cookbook are the chocolate chip oatmeal cookies, and they were a huge hit at work!

    I’ve tagged a lot more recipes, but it’s been so warm and humid in the Northeast that I’m waiting for the fall chill to set in before I bake again. Later this week is looking promising!

  24. First of all, congrats on your beautiful daughter! I’ve made your chewy chocolate chip cookies, soft funfetti chip cookies and birthday party thumbprints (my birthday was this past Thursday, so I made last week sprinkle week). My husband is so excited about all the cookies, he’s already picked out about two dozen recipes he wants me to make “next” AND he got me your first book for my birthday; I see A LOT of baking in my future! Thank you so much for creating such wonderful recipes and enjoy spending time with your little girl!

  25. Hi Sally! Glad baby Noelle is doing well! I have made monster cookies from your online recipe & the peanut butter ones many times. Love them both! I made the apple crumb cake, cake batter cookies, pumpkin spice sugar cookies with royal icing & the hot cocoa cookies& really love the banana breakfast cookies! I want to try the jam thumbprints, the chocolate sandwich ones & those black & white ones soon!!! Love the new book❤️

  26. Hope you and Noelle are doing well! I’m so excited to bake the pumpkin roll I’m hoping to bake it soon, I got the pan I needed over the weekend at TJ Maxx! So far I’ve baked the Soft Funfetti Chip Cookies and Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, and have so many more to bake! So excited for pie week can’t wait to see what you have in store for us!!

  27. Hi Sally – I made your sweet potato pecan casserole the other day and it was AMAZING! I am from the UK and I first tasted this at Thanksgiving in Estes Park, CO with my US family about 3 years ago.We don’t make this in the UK and I have no idea why as its DELICIOUS and would go so well with our traditional Christmas dinner. Congratulations on the birth of your daughter – you and Kevin must be over the moon 🙂 Love your recipes and your blog posts. You are my daily/weekly slice of America as I love everything about the US. Much love xx
