It’s been a good one! For the dog-friendly birthday celebration, we ended up spending the afternoon at a winery sipping, eating, and listening to great music. We’re sitting inside now as a storm passes through, pups on the couch, and enjoying one of our last nights in this house. Tell me what you’ve been up to! And, more importantly, WHAT have you been baking?!


  1. Looks like a super fun and relaxing weekend! Love that confetti birthday glass!
    I haven’t baked as much as usual this past week due to the humidity, just some scones a few days ago and then some strawberry muffins this afternoon. Now I’m thinking cheesecake and truffles need go come out of my kitchen soon!!! Maybe cheesecake truffles?! The red wine ones in your cookbook are so delicious  too! Happy belated birthday Sally!

  2. Happy birthday! Yesterday I made your browned butter pound cake with strawberry compote. It is fabulous! The browned butter definitely elevates it.

  3. So fun, I was just at Penn’s Woods a few weeks ago! I love their outdoor space! Happy belated birthday! I just took some flourless peanut butter banana chocolate chip cake out of the oven 🙂

    1. It was really fun there yesterday and perfect weather. Did you taste their peach and strawberry sangria? Because that stuff is incredible!

A bit late but always filled with happiness and cheer!!  It looks like you celebrated in an amazing way.  What a cutie Franklin is, Jude looks like he’s taken to his little brother.  I wish you so much love, peace and happiness!!  Thank you for sharing your birthday with us!!  I kinda wanna another furry baby now….I might have to go to the shelter soon and see who chooses me!!  And then I can make them some homemade treats! 

  5. Looks like you had a great birthday. Even though our weather here wasn’t too outdoor friendly (raw & rainy) we made the best of it.  I made a blueberry cake and a small 6″ yellow cake with chocolate frosting (loving my smaller cake pan!) This week is my last book club meeting of the season and I am making your browned butter pound cake with strawberry compote. I have been dying to try it and look forward to eating it (obsessed with brown butter baking!) Love your new pup, what a cutie! 

      1. Had to write back to let you know the brown butter pound cake with strawberry compote was a huge hit! My girls were anxiously waiting for me to get home with the extras (thankfully there were a few slices left.) That brown butter just put it over the top! Now I need to send everyone the link for the recipe. Thanks.

  7. As always your pictures are lovely. Looks like the new kiddo is fitting right into the family.
    This week I made two batches of cake pops. One was for the end of the year breakfast with the staff at my high school-they were mocha since it was breakfast! The second batch were chocolate for a high school graduation party hosted by a nurse I used to work with-her son was the graduate. Finally, I made your yellow sheet cake and paired it with my chocolate buttercream (extra from the cake pops) and toped with red, white and blue sprinkles. The cake was a BIG hit-thanks for a yummy recipe. 

    1. You and your amazing cake pops! How did you decorate the mocha ones? Those sound especially good! I’m so happy you loved that sheet cake!

      1. The mocha cake is a brown sugar cake with sour cream and the buttercream is a mocha cream cheese buttercream. I dipped them in milk chocolate and crushed up dark chocolate espresso beans to use instead of sprinkles. The ribbon is pale jute ribbon with dark brown polka dots.
        For the graduation ones, it was a chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream dipped in white candy melts and sprinkled with navy sugar and tied with a silver ribbon (school colors)! 
        This week I will be trying my Russian piping tips…the joy of a summer break!

    2. I’m a cake pop novice, looking for a little guidance here: When Amy mentions using chocolate buttercream and dipping in candy melts, does that mean frosting them and then dipping, or giving them a little buttercream filling and then using the melts as the frosting? Can I just dip them in a nice, shiny ganache? Also, I’m wondering if a classic chocolate mayo cake would be too moist to hold together well enough for a cake pop? Thanks, and happy Memorial Day!

  8. Oh my gosh Jude is the happiest dog ever!!  The photo of him and Franklin checking things out is so sweet.  Don’t get me started on the photo of Franklin sleeping!!! I made your m&m ice cream sandwich cookies and they were a hit!  I honestly have not had one of your recipes not work out Sally, thanks for doing all the hard work for us.

  9. Looks like you’re having the most relaxing and most delicious Memorial Day/Birthday ever! And Franklin is breaking my heart with his sweet little face 🙂 So adorable. I made lemon bars recently, and homemade coconut oil PB cups. Looking forward to trying your yellow sheet cake soon! 

      1. Yes they’re so good! Only a few ingredients but you have to eat them right away as they melt once they’re out of the freezer. But maybe you could revamp them to prevent that! This is my favorite recipe: 

  10. Great pics, Sally! Looks like the weather held up nicely for you guys – it POURED rain on Saturday for me, did not stop until about 10pm at night, oh well. Because of the weather, I did a bit of baking when I got back from work that night (too cold and wet to convince myself to go jogging…) I made up two batches of muffins – delicious chocolate chip muffins made from your base recipe (for the kids), and I tried out a new recipe for blueberry bran muffins (which were very good by the way, have you given bran muffins a spin in the kitchen yet? If you have, I’d love to see your recipe for them!) Anyways, this weekend is over, but summer’s coming. Can’t wait for the lazy days and being off school 😉 

    1. I love bran muffins but fear readers may not like them as much? Are they boring? I think I should just post my family recipe for them anyway. I haven’t made them in years. I like the idea of blueberry bran muffins though!

      1. I don’t think they’re boring at all! The right recipe is a perfect quick breakfast with lots of coffee 🙂

    1. It’s not– it’s a beef & bacon baked bean recipe my mom always makes. It’s really good! I’ll snag it from her and post it if more people are interested in it too!

  13. Happy Memorial Day! We went camping over the weekend, and I have to admit, it was great! (Even with all the mosquitos.) The s’mores pretty much made up for it! 😉

    That picture of Franklin is sooooo cute! He is a doll!

  14. Franklin is so cute! And it looks like he’s growing quite fast! I made brown sugar pop tarts and your deep dish chocolate chip cookie cake. I’m not sure what I did wrong with the cake because it was still really doughy in the middle despite the edges and top being brown. And then I think I melted the butter and chocolate topping wrong because when I poured it onto the cake it was liquid- not spreadable. But it was still yummy!! 

    1. He IS getting big already!

      Is this the cookie cake from my cookbook? My suggestion– if you try it again– would be to lower the oven temperature and bake longer. That way the center can bake through without the edges getting too brown. For the topping, try melting the two on low heat over the stove. And constantly whisk. You can add more chocolate to thicken if needed.

  15. Made your lemon blueberry layer cake for my mom’s 73rd birthday and my daughters 14 th birthday. They share the same birthday! Delicious as always!

  17. I made your blueberry muffins (from your first cookbook) and swapped in the butterscotch streusel from your banana bread as the topping. OMG Yum!!! Made with my gluten free flour blend and they came out perfectly moist and fluff!  So hard not to hoard them and eat secretively alone in a quiet corner, but my jeans are would be seeing at me if I ate the whole batch! Thanks for another fabulous recipe!

    As I type this, I am waiting for your peanut butter dog treats to finish baking. I’m making them for a friend, who has a beautiful yellow lab named Ali. She loves them!! Wouldn’t you know, I have two cats, so I make them for friends! Happy Memorial Day!

  22. Hey soul sister 😉 Even our birthdays are at the same time! Looks like your babies are starting to get along better- that is awesome. My girl’s weekend/ bachelorette party/ birthday bash at the beach was cancelled for me- I ended up with the stomach flu and spent most of my birthday weekend in bed- YUCK!!! But looks like you celebrated for both of us. I was able to make it to a family picnic Sunday and then celebrated at my boyfriend’s yesterday. I was also able to whip up a no-back PB Pie (courtesy of Michelle over at Brown Eyed Baker). Can you tell me about the white wine in your photos?? Looks so refreshing, but, I hate sweet wines so I am wondering if it was dry or not. Happy birthday 🙂 🙂

    1. Oh my gosh you poor thing! Feel better! So sorry it was all cancelled but hopefully rescheduled soon? I need to try Michelle’s no-bake PB pie recipe. Sounds perfect for summertime. The traminette was a sweet wine, only slightly dry I’d say. I don’t really love super sweet wines, but this one was perfect on a hot day.

      1. They had to go without me because her wedding is coming up in 2 weeks!!! I was so bummed but they are good friends and totally understood. Definitely make Michelle’s pie– she has a few on her blog but the NO Bake Creamy PB Pie with the chocolate crust is one of the best things I have ever had! And I know that you are a PB Fanatic so you will love it too 🙂 between the two of you, you keep my friends and family well fed and happy!

    I’m glad to hear you had a nice and relaxing weekend filled to the brim with some bubbly! I haven’t been baking anything except for thousands of cupcakes; otherwise, it’s too hot to turn on the oven! It’s all about the no bake treats or just eating PB frosting for me. I sweat just opening the front door.

    1. I get it! All of May was so cold and rainy then BAM 90 degrees for a week straight. We’re going to have a hot summer!

  24. I have not been baking anything! I have been doing my job a lot and been giving my dog lots of attention since it’s hot out. I went to my parents lake house with my boyfriend and we cut up watermelon and enjoyed it together. Today I made a yogurt bark. For my boyfriend birthday, I am going to make him a ice cream cake…Also, my dad is going for surgery soon. So lots has been on my mind… Well back to your website and look for a awesome recipe.

  25. So, Sally! Looks like so much fun! Just curious, do you ever experiment with recipes for treats for the furbabies?

    I don’t bake the same way everyone else does; I am a diabetic celiac with renal disease, but I use your recipes as the foundation for coming up with Sandi friendly treats!

    You can’t make a decent conversion unless you have an excellent standard, base recipe, and yours are it! Thanks so much, and Happy Belated Birthday!!!!

Happy belated birthday Sally!  First time I’ve ever commented on your site.  Love your blog and you’ve inspired me to begin baking/cooking like I’ve always wanted to do!  I’m really enjoying learning and experimenting with new things.  You’ve been a terrific mentor and your recipes are the ones I always try first!  On a separate note, yes Franklin is a doll baby but honestly Jude was one of the reasons I initially began following your blog!  He is such a beauty…size, color and that ever-present smile!  I adore him!!!
